Feral Camels Terrorize Australian Community

I know this story isn't funny to the people living there, and I'm glad something is going to be done by the government experts to protect them. Please don't think I'm laughing at someone's expense.

But when I read lines like "The community of Docker River is under siege by 6,000 marauding, wild camels," I have to chuckle.

Seriously - "under siege?" "Marauding?" Does anyone else sense that this writer might be burning too much of the late-night oil?

"Mr Taylor said the emergency funding would go towards helicopter crews herding the camels 10 miles out of town, where they would be shot. This is expected to start within the next few days."

Camel tastes quite nice, they should start a camel processing plant...

This reads like a Monty Python skit.

Dude, camels are not domesticated. In any sense of the term. They condescend to carry loads from time to time, but are really viscious small minded bastards with an ego the size of New Jersey.

Moose on the other hand . . . .

They updated the story, and it's a little less hyperbolic - though I don't really understand how 350 people can be considered a significant community.

But Mrs. Tendencies now agrees that they are, indeed, under siege - 350 people vs. 6,000 camels definitely qualifies.

it could be something to do with the fact that it's correct name is Kaltukatjar, and it's an Aboriginal township, although it that part of the world, probably any gathering of people permanently in one place is considered significant

That makes more sense than anything I could come up with.

I volunteered at the local Rescue Mission today, helping serve a Thanksgiving feast for the poor; the local transient population in this town is bigger than 350.

Umm, still wondering about the Swedish Lesbians, though....anyone?

you guys gotta keep in mind that some places here in Australia have even less then 350 people and are still considered to be a town.

They only really need to start worrying if the lead camel starts wearing a mask and tells the 350 inhabitants to "Just walk away." And if that camel promises safe passage out of the wasteland, he's lying.
