Feudal Japan architectural mystery

Well the title of this post is a bit over the edge as it\'s not about architecture per se but about the screen that are around the daimio as he sits during the battle - those are made of cotton or silk, with his mon on them.
I bought some from the Perry Bro. and out of 11 2 have on one side what is probably strips of wood in xxxx a bit like you use in gardens.
Is that meant to be behind the daimio, to protect him from Ninja throwing stars etc? Or is it just used if there is wind?

Btw I saw a seller at Salute who sells Feudal Japanese houses etc - I HAVE LOST HIS ADDRESS AND NAME!
does anyone know who I mean?

I tried asking my wife (Japanese), but she doesn\'t quite know what you\'re talking about. Do you have a picture?

The mako is the screen behind the Daimio. Normally a mako is silk or cotton on both side (someone standing on the other side of the screen would see the same type of cloth with the mon on it. The strange bits I have are normal on the front side, but on the back they haveover the cloth what I think is called a lattice in english, a bit like this:

It\'s either for making the screen more sturdy or to stop arrows... I\'m at a loss!

Lot of help, but she offered the suggestion that its mostly a structure with decorative purpose. Sorry, guess that\'s not a lot of help. She will maybe search, if she remembers.

Aye, it\'s not so much protective as it is structural and asthetic ;)
It\'s not lke he sits right in the middle of the battlefield lol

The ashigaru are from eastofindia.com They come painted and are 52mm if I remember correctly - I use their pics as reference for the clothes and armour.

This is driving me nuts: I took the leaflet and now I can\'t find it! Raaaaaah:cussing:
