Hello Everybody,

If this preamble seems lengthy, I apologize.

I\'ve been visiting this site now for a while now. I have read a lot of the articles, I\'ve picked up the CMON painting guide, and I\'ve even picked up some of the Miniature Mentor videos. And I\'ve been pretty happy with the results and improvements I\'ve made on my own.

Then I went to GamesDay LA 2008. My first one ever.
Now it\'s a whole new level.

There is a tremendous difference seeing the mini\'s in person. The work was fanatastic to say the least. Suffice to say, it lit a fire in me and I would really like to have a mini in that Golden Demon case. Do I want to win gold? Sure. But it\'s going to take a loooong while.
For now, I just want to get better.

I\'ve been posting some of my minis for a while now and I\'ve gotten some great advice from the comments and put them to use. I\'ve read a few comments on other minis saying post it on the forums for some really good input... so here I am.

This is a mini I was working on before I went to GD. It\'s the best I can do right now. What can I do better?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Oh and some ideas for a base would be well appreciated.

You need to make the lighting of the eyes more subtle, it\'s a bit too harsh right now. The golds need more depth, try inking it with scorched brown and highlighting it again. The rest looks fine to me but once again highlights seem too harsh (particularly on the armor).

As you say, seeing in person is completely different from judging by pics, but here are a few things I\'ve noticed on your Chaplain :

Pros :

*) The paint seems thin enough;
*) The blends are clean;
*) Your freehand seems precise enough.

Cons :

*) Your general use of light seems off. Unless he\'s surrounded by lights I don\'t see how that could work (guauntlet, helmet, shoulder pads, Crozius Arcanum, ...). You need to choose where the light is coming from (from above is generally the easiest);
*) Your shadows could be darker (I\'m saying this from what I see on the shoulder pads);
*) As junior elf says, the OSL on the eyes is a bit over the top; sometimes less is better ;).

I don\'t agree with what junior elf says about the highlights of your armor. Although missplaced, as I said above, I think they render well a gloss finish; they could even use an extra spot of highlight to make them pop.

For the base, do you have an army? What have you done for the rest of the troups?

I\'d go for ruins or temple tiles.

since i recently posted my first mini on cmon, I feel now i can return the favor (for those who posted on my thread).
Overall I think you did a great job, I particularly like the yellow shoulder pad, yellow can be tough and i think you nailed that pretty darn well.
the only criticism i have is with the eyes, i know (or assume to be more correct) they are glowing. It just doesnt look right as is. IF you havent already seen this its a great article on that technique:
glowing eyes.

Overall great job id give it a solid 8

Thanks everyone.

Monkeysplitters, that was one of the first articles I read on this site... I just wish I remembered to refer to it. lol I distinctly remember reading that article and between step 7 and 8 I went WHOA! WHAT?! because the line in between said \"the micro painting work starts\".
I will knock those eyes back a bit. Now that I\'ve been looking at it, should I leave the recesses in the eyes darker?

With regards to the base...
Do you guys think that it\'s important to have the same basing throughout your army?

I can\'t wait to get back from the long weekend and get back to the mini.
Please let me know more...

Personally yes as it adds to the overall impression of the army being unified.

i think the problem with the eyes is more the area around is almost too thick, if that makes sense. I guess to put it a different way is that there should be some of the base (the bone color) apparent under the glow. I would think thinning down the paint alot more (assuming you hadnt) and layerin it up would give it a nice glow effect, but im sure not an expert.

Thanks Necroghast. I have to agree.

However, about the way it previously looked. Do you think that style would be OK for a Librarian figure? Being exaggerated like that?

I\'ve also taken out the red gem in the Crux Terminatus. It just seems out of place. I\'ve decided to base it like my other \"command\" minis since I do want to play with it.

on the wpn I think the red could stand to be highlighted up some more as well as maybe a little smoother blend on his boots, its a great looking guy though you\'ve done a good job imo
