First the beauty, now the beast!

I made my first submission yesterday, and today will be my second with a rock troll from GW. You were all so wonderful with your praise and constructive criticism I had no fear of posting this one. I had to give it a bit of touching up because my daughters 4 legged meowing terror had attacked it. This was my first effort at painting something ugly. Please have a look and let me know what you think!

Yep, definitely ugly ...but in a good way :D Interesting choice of skin colour - a bit of a shame that it\'s so similar to the club and loin-cloth though as a bit more contrast there might have looked better. Your painting style is good - nice and neat and you\'re showing a good attempt at adding character to your minis through the colours and bases.

You may want to try experimenting with washes next. This will help add shading to your minis (like on the wood and rope on his weapon) and could help bind some of the colours together (like the brown and grey on the troll skin).

Most importantly, make the most of your painting time now as you\'ll be struggling to find the time when the little one arrives ;)

HB pretty much nailed what I was going to say. You had some very nice darklining on the girl. It would really help in areas like the axe and bone here.

A dark brown wash would really help define his flesh. As would a yellow-brown wash for the bone.

The axe could use some highlighting. a darker gray on the planes on the bottom with some lighter gray on the planes on top. Along with a bit of that thinned white on the edges.

The back is tough. A dark wash is going to darken his whole back but might help tie the spots in a bit.

Boy, reading back over this I sound pretty rough on you. Not intended. But your painting and brush control are good enough that you should be learning some \'next step\' skills like washes and highlights.

Hang in there and keep submitting. It won\'t be long you\'ll be moving way up in skills.

I noticed the issue with the axe, and I agree that I should have chosen a slightly different shade of brown. For the washes, that\'s all with inks, right? And they should be thinned?

This was also my first attempt at pinning, and his hands and head are pinned on, and I feel like I did a really good job with that, but I think I should also learn how to work with GS for filling in the cracks.

I really appreciate the comments and the pointers that you folks give, you\'re motivating me to take the next step in being better.

You did a good job hiding the joins - I never thought it was multipart. Filling with green stuff is really scary until you actually try it then you wonder what all the fuss was about. Just remember to use plenty of water, keep your tool moist (sorry) and use about half as much green stuff as you think you\'ll need (you can always add more later).

As for washes, thinned inks are good but dry shiny. Very thin paint can work with practice and seems to be the \"weapon of choice\" for the more experienced.

Good luck.

Thin inks until you can brush them onto newspaper and still clearly read the print underneath.
You have excellent brush control and very solid basecoats, this is an excellent start, as it really is the basis for any paintjob. I see people highlighting and shading on blotchy basecoats and TBH it just ends up looking rubbish. Its better to spend the time getting a great first coat.
Work on your shading now with washes and you can only get better!

nice work! keep them coming. I think the best thing you can do is just paint more and more minis right now, and just the experience of brush in hand will result in cleaner and cleaner minis. Looking forward to seeing more from you :)

looks like you have a lot of painting tips already so i\'ll just mention the base. It looks like you havent painted the gravel/sand you put on there - mayby it\'s just the picture. But I would spend some time doing that, I always find that unpainted thing glued to bases look just like that - recognizable objects, out of size. If you give it just a bit of color and a drybrush - it\'ll suddently look like natural size gravel/bolders etc. and bases finishes minis - took me way to long time to figure out
