Hi guys, have posted pics here but have not used the forum before, I am trying to improve my modelling/painting skills (I guess we all are) I have a Blood Angels successor chapter that I have just started, I really want it to be the best I can produce, this is my first figure, it has scored a 6.4, how can I improve it (bare in mind I want the face to be that ugly, beaten up 500 year old vampire look) all help appreciated

i have seen some of your work while voting. very good conversions. i think better pictures would defiantly get this mini a higher ratings, maybe do a close up of the freehand. as for your painting it looks pretty funky to me :) i like the rusting base and his bionics the metallics look nice and dirty, and the red looks weathered great job !!

Thanks guys, unfortunately I have a basic digital camera and I don\'t think I can improve the pic quality much, I used about 8 levels of highlight on the red so should I be increasing this to about 12 or should I be changing the brightness of each highlight.

Increase the contrast - make your final highlights brighter.

Pics would benefit from being larger and use a better background! Even if it\'s just a light coloured piece of paper or card bent up behind the miniature to remove the tat in the background.

As a personal preference, I like subtle highlighting better as opposed to massive constrast using less levels. I think it\'s just a photography thing. He looks awesome. However, as for suggestions for vampire looks, I really couldn\'t tell you.

Well I think if you want to improve you have come to the right place. Take what feedback you get and experiment to find what works for you. Some of the best advice I got was many years ago from my college mentor, a brilliant watercolorist and art professor, and she said \"Make the darks darker and the Lights lighter.\" I have tried to apply that more and more over these last couple of years back into the hobby. Also one of the best things you can do is invest in some good brushes. Windsor and Newton Series 7\'s, Raphael 8404\'s, Da Vinci Series 35\'s are all excellent brands that I have tried. Once you use a \"real\" brush you won\'t ever touch a GW brush again.

As far as reds go they are hard to do period and it takes lots of practice (and since you are workingon an army you will get plenty). For my reds, i start with either a brown or purple type base (P3 Sanguine base is an excellent purply red) and then lately I have come to use blues and teals to darken it for shading and highlight it with successively brighter reds.

Lots and lots of thin layers is the way to go, but you dont always have tiem when painting an army. (Lord knows my orks are taking forever). As you work you will find shortcuts and \"cheats\" that work for you.

For vampire flesh (I am currently working on a WFB winged vampire, so I can commiserate), I started with a base of VMC French Mirage Blue (slightly more grey than shadow grey) and gradually mix VMC light flesh all the way up to pure light flesh. This has a neat effect of giving it that dead, grey pallor without washing out the \"living dead\" feeling I like, moving from a dark cool to a very pale warm color.

That\'s all I have for now. Invariably I will think of ten other things later. You are off to a fantastic start. Just practice and improvement will come.

OH! One last thing: DO NOT BE AFRAID TO TRY SOMETHING NEW! ITS ONLY PAINT!

the main thing for me on this one is the face.. you need to get some shading in there.. not much as you are going for pale but enough to pick out his shapes...
The pic also will help a long way towards scores.. nice simple larger size just front and back can be more effective..

also forget that list of brushes thunderhawker just said.... sorry mate  I have just got the kollinsky sable pointed and pure red sable pointed fromrosemary and co .. after using all the above mentioned and losing my patience with the quality control on some brands I can only say that the brushes from this lady are phenomenal... Thank you Ritual for the recommendation.. all are individually hand made but better still a is their price... between £1.50 and £3 super quick super fast...

Oh and lastly really don\'t worry about the scores....scores on CMON very rarely relate at all to quality of the work.. These are looking great...

Having no experience with them, I cannot argue with you. I can only offer my experience with what I have. (I did order a catalog though).

Further, where possible try and buy the brushes in person to avoid those \"quality control issues\" or use a larger dealer such as dickblick.com.

Sorry to drag this off topic a bit but I just received a selection of 7 brushes from rosemary and co....... wow

Unbelievable quality, prices and service.
They really are great.

As for helping with this mini. ummmm

I think you need bigger brighter pics to give better advice but I think you definitely need to work on the overall contrast. Up the highlighs and drop the shadows.

Like everyone has said better pics would help. Try adding highlights as they said, more to the armour really as it\'s the bulk of the figure. Also add some more colours to it but remember to use colours which look good together and don\'t clash.

EXPERIMENT!! oh and have a go at freehand it adds a bit to the \'history\' of a figure especially with the vampirey theme.

3) will try more free hand, I have the tabard I could use, I just a little nervous
4) will work on the face a bit
