Okay, so here we go. I expect this will be ghastly, but I suppose all have to start somewhere. I started with Privateer Press' plastic Kaylessa model, from the warmachine retribution of Scryah start box. Last night, I did her hair, face, and goggles, and put down a base and ink on her cape.

The picture was taken with my cell phone.

I'll continue to update this thread as I go. If you have any questions about what I was trying to do vs. what you see, or if it just doesn't make sense, feel free to ask! I'm looking to improve, and I don't have expectations of greatness or anything, so please feel free to offer any constructive critiques you might have.

Thanks again,

Oni

Welcome! I'm intrigued. Is she primed or are you painting over bare metal? Try turning off the flash and taking the pic in some daylight, The glare makes it a bit hard to see.

Much better. I like the goggles and the anime like eyes so far. Get some more paint on there!

From what I can see in this image it looks like you are working on a transition in the cape and goggles. Looks good keep the images coming look forward to watching this model progress. More paint, more paint.

Progress!

I was going over some shading techniques for cloaks, and saw what I thought was a capitol idea, since painting around the base was driving me bonkers. So first thing this evening, I clipped off the base and the plastic sprue bit, and pinned her foot. For the rest of the evening, I had her pin held in a pin vise, and loved the new angles afforded me.

Tonight I basecoated. I was going for a smooth basecoat, and I put everything down in 2-3 layers. I love the sculpt, I just wish it had some of the detail depth of the metal figures that I have. Also, this model has an almost Liefeldian level of pouches. I guess she's supposed to be force recon, so it sort of makes sense... After doing the bottom most layers of leather, I had to apply another coat of primer to a few of the spots on the mode that lacked or had uneven coverage. Once that dried, I did her ceramics. Tomorrow I'll basecoat the gun and remaining sword bits, then start shading/highlighting.

Still trying to get a handle on photography of these things. May just break down and order a macro lens for the slr.

As someone who takes his WIP shots with a phone (with a crummy auto-focus), I've found it helps tremendously to make sure there's nothing else around for the camera to focus on - keyboards, patterned walls, pens, brushes, the dog in the background.
That and making sure to have plenty of light in front of the model.

Thanks!

Weekends always have a paucity of free time for me. I got some time to start on the base for this figure. I took one of the round bases that it came with, and cut out a bit of the base. Then I packed the bottom with black clay, rolled out a thin bit, and made a bottom to the excised bit of the base. After that dried, i added a layer of super glue over the clay for strength and permanency. Next, I've left a big pancake of clay out since Wednesday of last week hardening. After having at it a bit with a hammer, I had a decent rock. I used cork to build up a couple of other layers. Finally, I found some vallejo white pumice, which is just super nifty. I used it to mask smooth plastic and glaring joins. I need to let it cure over night, and will prime it tomorrow.
