Fishing for feedback - Ogre WIP (A little pic heavy)

Hello all,

First things first, I am widely known for constantly starting new projects and then never finishing them. (Or I will let them sit on the shelf for nearly a year, like my tarascus).

My goal with this WIP thread is to stick to this one project until I get it done. Hopefully I will finish something rather than start a dozen things! :)

So, here is the ogre!

I have included one of those \"mega closeups\" after I saw a thread about it, figured it would allow more critique. :)

So, here are my questions for you guys (and gals) :)

-You probably notice that the skull on the front is a different color than normal. I wanted to paint it like how old dinosaur bones look, really dark. Thoughts?

To contrast with the dark areas, I decided to paint the fur on the hide a very bright color (Foundation tausept ochre to white). You can see a little bit of this to the left of the head and on the back. Should I stick with this color on the whole model, or should I make it appear that there are multiple hides from different colored beasts?

Also, I havent had too much experience in the \"chipping\" technique that I tried on the horns and skull. Does that look effective enough, or should I go a bit brighter?

And of course I would love to hear any and all feedback :). I always try to return the favor.

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Its looking really good mate i like the hair, and skin colour. The bones are looking really good the only thing i\'d say is the darkness is maybe obscuring some detail, but that could be just down to the photo and the fact that can\'t see the angles. The fur looks really good but i think i\'d go with at least one other colour of hide just for contrast. But on the whole I really hope this is a model that you see through to the end cause its looking good.;)

Thanks!

I did the best I could with the photos, the lamps were not working (I only used a ceiling light).

Im really hoping I can finish this one too :) (You should see what I have half painted sitting at home, it\'s quite a collection!)

Looking good. I like the choice of colours for the skin and hair, nice contrast. That mega closeup does indeed let us see the small details. Great work on the eyes and teeth.

matt,

btw thanks for the comments on my tau battlesuits. much appreciated.

cc: i like the coloring of the hair the most. it seems to work quite well. the close up of the face shows that your blending and layering are starting to really come together. however i have found that if you push the tints a bit more on the extreme highlights, you can get a more dynamic look. for example, try mixing a bit of blue with a bit more orange and turn it into a wash. since blue and orange are complementary colors it hsould work nicely on your grey blue skin. as for the \"chipping\" effect, i would say some of it is hit and miss. there are parts that work and others that dont. i too am running into that problem. i wish i had what electolito had. but alas. :) anyhow the skull is also done quite nicely and very subdued. keep up the good work and i always look forward to your stuff.

rock on.

I would say that you should make the skull a bit brighter though ^^

That face is stunning! The hair and eyes and teeth... wow. You\'ve really got some nice contrast going on there :) I really like the skull too - I think the trompe l\'oeil scratches are great as they are. A very new slant on an often-painted mini, and right now looking like on of the best! I look forward to seeing progress :D

Thanks a lot for the comments everyone! :) It is truly appreciated!

Antnol and I got a good painting session in today, and I managed to nearly finish the arm/club. I got a little tired of mindlessly painting fur, so I decided to give that a shot.

I decided to go with real metallics on this one, I thought it would fit better on a dirty or grungy ogre! :)

Metallics were done with Chainmail, washed with the foundation Charadon Granite (think i spelled that right) then washed with a mix of black and brown ink, then re-highlighted with chainmail.

The club is painted as stone, but I found that it matched the ogre\'s skin a little too much, so I tinted it brown. I think it looks different enough now.

I would love to hear what you all think of the progress!

Thanks again,

-Matt

Metals look nice and battered, I agree on your choice for the wooden club. Also like the gems, perhaps they could do with some white points where they catch the light? :)

Keep going, looking great so far. ;)

Cheers,

This guy is coming together quite nicely. The detail on the club looks really good and is extremely clean. Hope you stick this one out because I want to see it finished. See you next weekend.

Update! :)

Well, I managed to find some time to get in a short painting session.

I finished up the right arm, got a good amount done on the left arm, got some fur done, and some hides.

Here\'s a few questions for all of you out there: :D

-I added another highlight on the cow skull, just on the edges of the cracks. Does this make the cracks look a bit better?

-I tried another color of hide to with the others. This is more of a white leather, as you can see on his arms and the shot on his left leg. Any opinions on this color choice? Also, what would be a good color of fur to go with that? Maybe a dark grey for contrast?

And as always, C&C are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, everyone!
