Fixing up old games.

This thread should possibly be labeled "An old man's attempt to brainwash poor children." Since I am fixing up some old miniature games I have lying about; in order to see if I can get my nephews, and in time, my own children to catch up on this hobby. But as I've been busy working on not being broke the last 15 years, there has been little time for hobbies. Now I have semi-retired, and have all the time in the world to get back to painting and gaming.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to paint anymore. :p

Still, I'll make an effort into getting these things up and going.

The first game I'll complete is Hero Quest. It's been lying in storage for like.. 18 years. :) But it was the first game I played, and the first miniatures I tried to paint. So I hope our kids will like it just as much as I did once upon a time.

The original miniatures were all there, with a few defects, but they are so bland compared to today's standards, so I decided to buy everything new. Should be easy, right? Surely just 28mm warhammer army stuff from GW would do?

No.. It was not that easy. Warhammer armies have changed over the last 10 years..

Goal:

31 Monsters:

8 Orcs
6 Goblins
3 Fimir
4 Chaos Warriors
1 Warlock
1 Gargoyle
4 Skeletons
2 Zombies
2 Mummies

I also decided to get miniatures for the different special characters in the quest books.

Then I would need 4 heroes. I decided to go large and get 8. One of each sex for each class. More fun for the wives to join. :D

Okay, orks were easy. One pack of Savage GW orcs. Cool miniatures that looked like dungeon dwelling nasties. One thing ticked off right away.

(I will post pics of my finished miniatures when I am able.)

But the GW goblins all have hoods.. And the ones with no hood looks very cartoony. Not much better than the old ones. I think I will get a pack of the LOTR goblins, but I am very open to suggestions on cool models for these.
It seems like all miniature manufacturers want to put silly hats on goblins, or otherwise make them big fat and ugly. Rackham miniatures had some amazing ones, exactly like I would want, but of course, they could not be located.

Setback..

Oh, well.. Next:

Fimir. I was prepared to have to do some compromizing here, and get some lizard men, or similar miniatures, but Warhammer Forge had just released a pack of three. :D YAY! They are in the mail and on the way.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/Warhammer_Monsters/FIMIR-WARRIORS.html

I ordered a small pack of generic Chaos warriors along with the Orcs, pack of three. The last one I want to stand out, and are still trying to decide which one I want. Would be nice with some suggestions here, too.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1040519

I had good ol' Heinrich Kemmler lying around from my Warhammer days. I really like him, and will use him as the evil sorcerer. Win, Win. Yes. I also had an old Reaper miniature. Lich with wings and an old tome which can be used as other evil mages in the encounters. I can not find him with the figurefinder, so I suppose it could be out of production.. or I'd give a link.
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1460018a

The Gargoyle is the only miniature I will keep from the old game. It's pretty nice and unique. But they do encounter a Gargoyle as an early opponent, so I decided I'd need more. I settled for a very cheap Reaper rubber miniature since it was only like 3 bucks. http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/77028 Sadly, it is very rubbery, and seems to fall apart fast. Get what you pay for I suspect. But it looks really good.

Skeletons I also had lying around, and could salvage ten from my rather shabby warhammer army. Just generic skeletons with spears.

I am still undecided about the zombies. I really only need a few. But the reaper line zombies are not very detailed. Manic had some nice ones, but in a box of 30.. And then I think the Warhammer zombies have more detail. I'll most likely get a pack of GW zombies, unless someone has any better ones to recommend.

The mummies were also a bit tricky to choose. I finally decided on the reaper mummies. Bought 5 one of each, and four were nice. :)
http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/02507 Kalith, Mummy King
http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/02885 Kalith, Mummy Lord
http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/02156 Mummy of Hakir - I chopped off the thin arm on this one, and modded it with an old bit I had lying around. Armed him with a spear.
http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/14399 Nefoskar, Awakened
http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/02484 Mummy Lord of Hakir - This one I really do not like. It has a very strange right arm, and it seems much smaller than all the others. I think I will take his staff and give it to the Awakened..

I've bought the heroes, too. They are in the post somewhere in the world. Bought all from Reaper, too. Had a hard time to decide on the barbarian, had to look at "Conan" miniatures everywhere.. and to find a young mage that was not too extravagant, but also did not look like a mutated harry potter..

I finally settled for Dantrag of Haimdall: http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/02233
And for the Mage, Drake Whiteraven: http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/03599
The current Dwarf is a Kragmarr Captain: http://www.reapermini.com/figurefinder#detail/14554

For the Elves I use some dark elves I had lying about.

Okay, so that's it. Will post some pics to go along, as soon as I have taken them. :)

It's all up to the mailman now. Got to hate slow postage. :(

Edit: At least here are some images of the minis so far: http://imgur.com/a/gHinB
I also printed out some spell cards that were not in the European version, along with the adventure manual to go with them. Apparently the American rules were a little harder. :)

If you're willing to spend a bit more, you could try for the old Rackham stuff on e-Bay. They've got the most characterful goblins I know, and I don't even like goblins to start with.

Having had a vampire counts army, GW zombies are definitely average. With zombies being all the rage right now, it shouldn't be too hard to find better ones.

You could try GW gnoblars (ogre kingdoms), maybe?

zombies: GW is probably your best bet, tbh.

Thank you for this. The gnoblar trappers are pretty cool. I would never have thought to check the other lists for greenskins. :)

I did check there, but there were very few miniatures out for sale. I might combine with the gnoblars, afterall I only need two more..

Well, I have been searching a lot, and can't seem to find good alternatives. a blister with high quality miniatures would be okay, since I only need a few. But I guess this might be another vote for mantic? Afterall, you get a lot of extras there, like gravestones and such. Did you have a specific brand in mind?

Nice project. I am guessing the RedBox miniatures goblins are closer to what you want, but they seem to be out of product quite often and have a mediocre web site.

Those are indeed nice. I like the look of their bonebacks. :) Very detailed, and sort of humoristic without being overly silly. I'd like goblins with no head dressing as I said. No night goblin look-a-likes. I think I'll pick up some LOTR goblins and a pack of Gnoblars on my next trip to the "local" GW store, and just see which ones turn out the nicest. ^^ It will be fun to paint them either way. I need the practice. And bits leftover might surely come in handy elsewhere.

I really hate myself for rushing to buy some of the heroes.. but I'll just have to bite the sour apple and buy more I suppose. I've already ordered two male barbarians, and three mages. Oh, and two dwarves.. then I find this guy upon registering here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/cmon-barbarian-king.html

I did not even know they sold miniatures here when I registered two days ago.. or so. Just thought it looked like a nice community to re-learn painting. :)

Maybe I should just continue to buy barbarians, and use them as a Mordheim "gang". Haha. :D

So many memories playing Hero Quest, and similar to you Jawofhana, first painted miniatures... I remember doing customs scenarii with my brother then playing them with friends for days... We were the only one having the game fully painted, so everybody came to our place to play! Really great memories!
Thank you for that post, recall good moments of childhood... I will have to dig it back to my parents place for an introduction to my two boys!

Yes, same here. I got it as a birthday gift from my brother when I was eight or nine. I was amazed at how much online resources are available as well. Were no internet back then. :p

If you are serious about digging out the old box, this site might be of use to you: http://heroquest.no-ip.com/

Tyranid attack is pretty straight forward. I've had it since 92-93, and the models have been bumped around in the box, been lent away or just frankly disappeared. It's quite an extensive game if you build on the base, but the original box contained:

6 Tyranid Warriors.
8 Genestealers
2 Genestealer Hybrids
4 Terminators
1 Terminator Librarian
6 Scout models
2 Scouts with heavy bolters
2 Scout Sergeants

All of these are readily available from GW, so it should be easy to get them. All but the Hybrids.

Luckily I found these in the reaper range, so I am already set. :)

Next paycheck will go fast though, since Those Tyranids aren't cheap. And I have to get two boxes of scout snipers in order to get the Heavy bolter minis, I believe. Correct me if I am wrong, please. :)

Ordering miniatures to Norway is a big hassle, though. Not being able to order anything above 200NOK at one time is frustrating to say the least.

The next few heroes for HQ arrived today. Plus a little bonus miniature and a paint bottle, thank you Reaper. :D

Unfortunately, the government doubled their cost with their taxes and fees. miniatures for 254 NOK (42$) cost me 451NOK.. (76$). And I hate them now.. :( But then again.. they pay for the miniatures anyway, so.. :p.

There was a dwarf lady commander, too. But she was camera shy and hid when the picture was taken. (As if anyone has seen female dwarves, ever, anyhow.. )

On a side note, these ghouls stand in for zombies while I wait for the mailman, and most likely, more taxes.. >.<

Wrong zombies came in the mail. Have to return them on Monday. :( At least CMON have a guy on the case in order to fix it. Hopefully I will get them soon. :)

In the meantime I have to wait for the bank account to fill back up.. and do some ~zero cost work on a Necromunda board. :)

Start gang will be Enforcers, and Eschers for my girlfriend. :)

But first I need another Styro plate and a ton more terrain.. happy days..
