IL2, damn I love that game.

@Scott, think of the IL2 part as the game engine only. This version features different theatres to fight in, including Battle Of Britain obviously, but even the original had a whole raft of aircraft to choose from so unless you were actually fighting Germany v. Russia you wouldn\'t necessarily see a Sturmovik.

Fair enough, but it\'s damn wierd packaging for a product. If I open a disc called \"Led Zeppelin\'s Greatest Hits\" and I find that yes there is a Led Zeppelin song on it, but it\'s mostly other stuff, I am going to be vexed.

Very fine looking game though. I remember playing Aces over Europe back in the day on my 486 and loving it. Amazing how far they\'ve come.

Donwloaded the demo for my 360.

Lovely graphics especially the geography.
A nice little effect is : after shooting down some nazi scum, the burning wreck stays burning in the landscape...so you see black smoke churning up from the ground.

tried to play it in simulation at one point, it was like trying to shoot clay pigeons whislt standing on a rocking boat.

and every time I tried to turn the aircraft (this was a spitfire) I ended up spinning out of control in a nose dive to my doom.

Very good fun though. I haven\'t tried realistic yet, but simulations out for me.

I\'ll be having me some of that especially as it\'s on Xbox. Spent many an hour getting shot down and crashing in the original IL2. Great game.

I usually turn the stall/spin thing off. I really enjoy realism when I play a flight sim but the key word there is enjoy. The PC version has a lot of features you can turn on and off.

@Spacemunkie - Yup, that\'s IL2. I found it enjoyable because it was a challenge just to keep some of those planes in the air!! I actually plunked down a pretty penny for a set of VR goggles and those really add a lot.

Are those goggles worth the cash? You need a special graphics card, and monitor to use them don\'t you?

I\'ve really enjoyed them. The head tracking is what\'s so cool. Just like real life, you look to your left and the view swings left with no lag. That in and of itself is what I like best.
The 3D in the cockpit is very good. When up flying I don\'t get such a sense due to (I think) the distance is so far that things flatten out. This could be peculiar to me though. There have been a bunch of movies that have come out lately in 3D which I have seen. The 3D does work but it\'s not leaping off the screen whereas I\'ll talk to friends who have seen the same flick and they are just bowled over by the effect. I was able to actually get \'under the skin\' of the IL2 game to some of the code (?), found a line that pertained to the left and right positions. I changed a value there and the effect got REALLY DEEP.....at least in the cockpit.
Not having to use the little hat switch is nice and it\'s SO INTUITIVE. You have a weird sense of actually being there. Go through a formation of bombers and you actually have to turn your head up to see the one\'s above you. It has little headphones built too so you get stereo.
I\'ll say right up front, there are some issues to contend with. If I were more computer literate I could probably iron them out. The 3D used to work in IL2 and then just quit. In LOMAC (Lock-on Modern Air Combat) the 3D looks real nice but the head tracking doesn\'t work....have to use the hat. Microsoft FSX, the head tracking works but the 3D stopped. It was fun flying through Yosemite Valley in an ultralight and looking up and to the side as I went by Half Dome!!
The graphics are a bit \'soft\'. A bit grainy but still VERY enjoyable.
When looking straight forward there can be a bit of wiggle.
There were some issues with video cards but I got a patch for mine that helped....that may be what is causing some of the problems I\'ve encountered. It sounds like, from the website that it now works with all video cards.
It doesn\'t take a special monitor, it IS the monitor. What you have to do is go into the control panel and switch the goggles to be the primary monitor while you\'re playing.
Having had them for over a year now I would highly recommend them.
