Yeah I definitely DO NOT reccomend getting all of the warhammer 40K books off Kazaa as I definitely did not do and would never suggest that anyone would go on kazaa and search for warhammer under the documents settings as that would just be naughty.

Who are you, Markus, just as I read that lightning struck over here!lollollol

Cool electrical storm visible from my window!

Becca, beg borrow or steal the rulebooks and codexes..that\'ll give you the fluff you need.

Just remember, the 40K universe is veeeery gritty...and everybody is afraid...except Tyranids....:D

Yeah the whole 40k universe is dark. The witch hunters root out hidden evil.

\'The Ordo Hereticus, or Witch Hunters, are devoted to fighting the mutant, rogue psyker and heretic.\'

I can\'t believe your a GW virgin. I wouldn\'t have started the hobby if it weren\'t for them. There are some decent books around covering the 40k universe but, if you can bring yourself to go into a GW store just flick through the Witch Hunters codex for ideas.

well the nearest GW shop is 45 minutes away in good traffic, but with all the construction going on around here, its a VERY long trip.

the LGS over here is more like a comic shop with games tacked on... they dont have much.

so thats why i asked...if i lived closer to Tampa, id be over there all the time!

yes. i am a gw virgin. i\'ll admit it. im not ashamed!;)

The Sisters of battle are like nuns in power armour. Very strong fanatical faith in the Emperor and the Church. They are split into about six different orders named after a saint or martyr. They are the elite military force of the church.

The Witch Hunters are one of the three inquisition branches. They watch the watchers. Imagine them being like members of the spanish inquisition (nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition, got to love monty python lol) they look for evil and corruption in everything.

Another Virgin.

I\'m reviving this because until recently I knew nothing about the Warhammer universe. Except for the occassional random model I\'ve never bought any of the GW stuff. Because of the new Wood Elves all that has changed, and I now have two White Dwarfs under my belt and I just got the Wood Elves book. Since I\'ve never read the rules the technical stuff is a little rough for me, but I was surprised by how good the fluff was. The Warhammer world sounds very intriguing, and I was wondering what source would be best to learn about the world in general? Should I get the rulebook (I\'ll need it eventually), or would picking up the Warhammer RPG book be worth the cover price? I don\'t plan on playing the RPG ever, being a die-hard D&D player, but I\'m wondering if anyone has bought it and could tell me if their is a lot of background info. I\'d like a poster-size map of the world too, do they make one?

Remember you don\'t always have to pay GW prices you can get a lot of background fluff/S£$%^ from their web pages including lists backroung info concept art annd some good conversion ideas occassionally (Cough cough I really liked the Skaven conversion they have up at the moment) :D

I have the Wood Elf book, Wolf; the history section is very interesting. The problem is, you only get the world history from the Wood Elves perspective, and I want the big picture. I see a lot of minis painted up here at CMON, but it\'s fun to put a back-story to them now. I have seen a few Heinrich Kemmler, but now I actually know who he is! Does GW make a world map?

Markus try THIS you might have to copy and then enlarge it yourself but if you follow the links youcan see parts of the map that will relate to the different races.

I think I have another somewhere that is a bit clearer if I find it I will let you know.

The fluff in the rule book is from the Empire\'s perspective. Sort of like a documentary of the world according to the imperial scribes, scribes with appallingly limited knowledge - there\'s about one paragraph on the Dark Elves. There is a \'world\' map in the rule book, but it doesn\'t include the new world, the world of the Dark Elves, the Lizardmen or the High Elves. And where the maps in the different army books co-incide, they differ too. What fun! And they differ from edition to edition too.

I think the fluff is the sum of all the books, there is no single background reference. The Hordes of Chaos book is good for fluff, since every race is touched in some way by that fluff. After all, Chaos is GW\'s favoured army.

Becca you\'re not alone...

...whilst in Memphis last weekend Grumb and the boys stopped by the local GW shop to visit THuff (who won a Silver Demon at the Chicago GD - Yay Terry!!) and the boys got sucked into Warhammer. Grumb got them a starter set as an early birthday present and now they\'re all painting. Little SV (William) loves Nekkrons (sp?) and Bennett loves the \"bugs\" (tyrannids??). I\'m just looking forward to creating/building all kinds of terrain for them to play on!

Maybe if you all come down for Atlanta GD we can have a mega-war!

I tried to stop them, but they over-ruled me with the \"It\'s an early birthday present\" scam.

But, hope is not all lost...they played a Basic D&D game at GrailQuest and are chomping at the bit to play a kid-friendly game Grumb keeps saying he\'s going to run.

Becca,
I found a bunch of the old codices on Ebay for @ $2 to $3 each. I love the witchhunters, the old sisters of battle codex is really heavy on fluff.
