Flying Bases

Hello
I am trying to do up a some flying mini\'s, assault marines/raptors/tau etc etc. However, I hate the large clear plastic rods that come with the minis to allow them to \"fly.\" Any suggestions on another material to use that is easily available to provide flight to these poor gentlemen.

Hmm, brass rod comes to mind right away. Course you would have to sculpt flames or something over top of the rod to hide it.

well i bought the base that comes with a dreadnaught from GW bits section. drill a hole in the middle and insert plastic rod.

now with my new army ive been working at building all of my own original base , you can go down to your local hobby shop and ask them if they carry \"plastruct\" its a company that make tiny sheets of textured plastic, like a sheet that looks like diamond plated steel, this stuff is excellent and ive even started using it on models.

Actualy I think it\'s much less intrusive than the nasty plastic rods, and looks fine left alone.

Try a fully modelled base with pieces of rock/rubble sticking up then pin the figure to it by a heel, hand etc so it looks like it is flying over an obstacle.

I have the old (very old) GW high elf on giant eagle pinned by the eagles foot to a piece of real slate rising up from the base - it looks ok!

I think the rock/debris idea would work awesome for jump packs and such, but what about for Tau drones? I got some rebar wire from work but its much too flexible... Any ideas for that? I know I\'ve seen some people use some sort of black wire or very thin rod, just can\'t tell exactly what it is.

I\'ve had pretty good luck with wire clothes hangers. Just cut \'em up with wire cutters to the desired length and use like you would the GW plastic ones. They are way more sturdy, dirt cheap and plentiful.

I like to use the really tough piano wire you can get in hobby shops. It is kind of a boltgun color, as opposed to brass that you will have to paint, and quite thin, but tough. Almost disappears when the mini is viewed. I will warn you that it can be tough to cut, it is very hard!
