I don\'t believe in French scientists. :D

Kidding of course

Okay, maybe not so much.

Humanity peaks in 2060...

Figures it\'d be the French scientists. What have they discovered since Pastuer?
Meh, mighty safe to claim this when the majority of us will be dead and will not be around to hold them accountable to their words.
They aren\'t taking effect what technology will be available or something else that they cannot measure, sheer talent.

quote: Mr Toussaint suggested that in the future records should be less important than the way a race is run and the quality of the sporting contest.

oh gods NO!!! The idea IS TO WIN. To try to break the records, not to just show up!

Is it just me or does it seem that the scientists, politicians, and parents are trying to turn us into H.G. Wells\' Eloi?

Thank you, but I\'ll stay a Morlock.

What? The french giving up?
After all aren\'t they effectively saying \"we cannot get better so we surrender in 2060.\"

Of course it could just be that they don\'t do so well at the olympics (ever since that pesky corrupt judging thing).

French? That sounds like a very British attitude to me.

Also, I think they are underestimating the level of performance enhancing drugs, bio-implants and bionic parts that will be available by then!

1. Evolution isn\'t a matter of \"belief\", at least in the often-used sense of the term (not trying to start something!)

2. Like it or not, we have limits. Bones, tendons and muscles are only so strong. Muscles will only get so big without drug treatments. So I can see what they\'re getting at.

PS: what kind of pizza does King Wenceslas like the most?
One that\'s deep-pan, crisp and even.

We\'ll just invent new sports. Like 127m running , high jump with backpacks, 200m hurdles with barb wire, 15 minutes of free-basing, find the missing glacier etc.

I don\'t know. Check out the Muscular Whippet compared to its genetically normal counterpart:

LOL the key words there are \"genetically normal\".

In one of Robert Asprin\'s \"Myth\" fantasy books, the heroes are challenged to a sporting contest by a race of pudgy, weak people - only to discover that their \"players\" have been bred to the point where they\'re basically a separate species, much stronger and nastier than the originals. I doubt humans are going to go that route any time soon, however.

In the early 1900s someone suggested that the patent office should be shut down because everything that could be invented had been invented.......

So, what you\'re saying is that you *believe* in the accuracy of the scientific method?;)

(I couldn\'t help myself...I did try...):D

The moment you perform resurrection in front of me at controlled conditions, calculate time it takes and determine standard deviation of an observed value I will admit that scientific method is inaccurate, until then the burden of proof is on you:D

As for French data. Again at controlled conditions that exclude genetic modifications and drugs Biological system has certain biomechanical parameters. Heavy weighting is a good example. At some point the weight will simply crush you, then again we might be able to invoke some deity that will help with that. I am willing to bet though that, similar to recent NYC marathon it will be considered \"unfair competitive advantage\" lol.

(They banned any sound reproducing devices during NYC marathon - ipods, CD players anything)

They may be right on how far human physiology can go, however, they are claiming that all records will end or not be broken because everyone will reach this limit.
This is a very narrow assumption that a sport is all physical. Natural genetics, training, mind set and sheer talent can and will affect many sports more than just sheer musculature.

Take our hobby for example: I cannot paint like Fluffy, Alexi-Z, or numerous other painters, and I have years or even decades of experience over some of them, they beat me through sheer talent, and even if I were to work up to their level they would surpass that level in the time it took me to reach it.
Some people are just innately talented.

Well, I intend to take up sports in the 2050s so by the 2060 time comes round I\'ll be competing. Then we\'ll see if those records remain intact.

Ehhhhh I\'m prety sure mankind isn\'t just going to plateu in 2060...
I mean if you look back and think about what we have now, i bet they\'d say the same thing about us right now!

I agree with Enions BS detector!

Boy..you sure did throw a lot of big words around to completely miss the point of my jab...:D

I was simply pointing out that \"belief\" has a part in science as well...as the scientific method didn\'t just pop into existence---- every theory starts as a belief---the method is in place to as the *tool* to help establish that belief as the reality.
