forgeworlds copyright

hello everyone
I was at GW yeterday and some of my buds were having an argument about forgeworld well one of buds said if you scratch build a model that looks exactly like forgeworlds model that its ok to cast but only for your own personal use.He was saying you cant sell it or it will charged as copyright.

well any agreements or disagreements??

yeah...thats pretty much copyright infringement. any place you make and sell copies of minis too will do that to you. a few years ago some indian guy was making knock off copies of gw minis and selling them for cheap prices on ebay. he got caught and had to take out a half page apology that he had to pay for in white dwarf.

if its for yourself then rock it out and have fun.... sell it or market it and your in deep trouble.

The thing is the time you wold spend sculpting it, then the expense of RTV molding rubber and Urethane casting resin..you might as well just buy the damn thing.

yeah thats true but i was talking to a sculpter and he explain to me it can get expensive but it can also be good for practicing and getting your skills up as a sculpture.

No it\'s not.
All that is, is just plain duplication.
You want to develop skills design something from scratch and build it up. Learn problem solving and structural construction for modelling. Since the vast majority of Forgeworlds designs are Tanks or vehicles what is needed is engineering principles applied in a minature form.

If you want to sculpt then copying an existing figure on a one to one basis may teach you some things about anatomy and posture.

I dont understand why anyone would want to copy forgeworld stuff and then cast it to sell anyway as nobody would buy a poorer quality version anyway (unless the re as good as them of course!)

As Dragons Reach said, simply copy to learn and develop your skills and of it course also has the benefit of saving you a bit of money as you ll have something similiar to paint afterwards as well.

Sadly Yes.
Once bought a resin figure in a sealed box at a show, the display one was great.
Huge casting bubbles on the surface, injection port lumps the size of my fingers, massive distortion due to catalytic heat.
Worst £15.00 I ever spent.

In the US, I believe that even if you don\'t sell it you are guilty, and can be charged.

Your sculptor buddy is correct that it is good practice though. Especially when it comes to setting up molds and casting parts. That takes a good bit of figuring out.
