Formor Fiend

Man, I don\'t want to see another Formor Fiend for at least 30 seconds now. I painted for ages and I am more or less ready... just the base needs to be done. Well, here he is:

At first I was really pleased. I was sure I would like this mini.
Needless to say, I don\'t think he\'s good anymore. But he probably is my best mini so far..... furthermore, I know it sounds absolutely stupid and it makes me feel like an idiot to say it, but he looks better in real life. Not that that would change anything
OK, I\'ll stop talking crap now and I\'ll get to the point.
I wanted a green skin, but not an orky skin, so I used Yellow Olive as my basecoat (note: I always start with my deepest shade) and went up to Sick Green in nine layers. The metal shoulder guard is still my favourite part, I just like the look of it and I think it came out well It was also my first time painting claws or at least larger nails, and they didn\'t really come out well...

This guy is a nightmare to take a photo of, partly because of his pose and partly because I am by no means a photography expert.

Anyway, I\'ll upload him into my gallery after I finished the base (going to do that tomorrow.... just thinking \"Formor Fiend\" raises my pulse currently), and maybe I\'ll even go over the paintjob some more. But I am really tired of painting him now, and after all he\'s just to play with (I don\'t \"game\". I play with toy soldiers.)

Of course this would not be a proper \"Mosch\"-thread if I didn\'t ask for help So, do you have any comments for me? Anything helpful to look out for on my next mini or any tips on how to take a better photo for my gallery tomorrow? Yes, I did read the articles already

Hmm, a better photo would sure help.
I just can\'t see enough of the front of the mini, it\'s very shady.
So yes, a better photo and i\'ll come up with something constructive

OK Mosh, you gotta get those lights down so we can see his face, not leave it all in shadow to hide your good work.

It looks like your light is a bit hot on our right side - very shiney arms. It also looks like you need to paint up the highlights there.

The metals are good

The hair looks like it needs one more dark wash (brown? red?) and a highlight on the very tip top. (where the light is glaring now.) It could be the lights on him tho.

I have NO idea why he is that dark. FIVE lamps at different positions PLUS a handheld \"cold light\" flashlight diagonally downwards and I already touched up the brightness via Photoshop. As the photo is obviously a huge problem, I will take a new one tomorrow. In the yard, so far the sun is the best light source I have found

Airhead: The hair is actually more defined than it looks in the picture. It\'s probably the light, I suppose the cold light thingy does that...? No idea really.

EDIT: I\'m a liar. I said I wouldn\'t touch him anymore today - I\'m back at my painting table with my little guy anyway. It\'s an addiction, I tells ya, and addiction!

OK, here he is again:

I think that picture is quite nice. By the way, the eyes glow in the dark.

AND another question: I was going to a)varnish this guy with Marabu and b)glue some static grass onto the base. Do you think I should FIRST varnish it all, THEN glue on the grass and then take a picture again? Or how would I do it best, I want a piture that is not shiny but DOES show the static grass....

Oh, and comments about my paintjob are also more than welcome

Mosh, MUCH better pic. Look at his left arm and see where the light is giving highlights? Paint those in - and the very top of the hair as well also the knuckles on his right hand.

I really like the metals, but why is the buckle so much lighter than the shoulder pad & wrist? It looks like the buckle did not get an ink that the others did.

The skull is very nice.

He looks like he is looking down at something he is about to slice or has just sliced (snotling perhaps?) The camera shot might be cool from that angle? Get a good view of his face that way.

Lastly, clean up his left wrist. A bit of silver is on the skin.

Unless your varnish is DEAD flat. Put the grass on, pics, then varnish.

I don\'t think I\'ll hightlight it again - I don\'t think I could get any smaller on those strokes. The knuckle actually lost the paint while I handled the mini I\'ll correct that of course

I also was a little perplexed about the belt buckle. I found several spot where it seems I overpainted which are actually invisible in real life, but I\'ll give some attention to it again. Let\'s see if I can get it to look better on my photos and in real life...

I did the skull by basecoating it white, then painting the highlights with Ivory. Then I painted some homemade wash medium directly onto the skul, then put a drop of black ink into it. I waited a minuite and while the ink was still wet I applied another drop of wash medium and two drops of Chestnut Ink. I used a similar technique for the hair, Only I rehighlighted the hair

While the angle idea is a great one, I doubt I can pull it off. It was hard enough to get a photo from this angle, I would have to squirm under the table for the worm view

I cleaned up what I overpainted before you said it actually, also only saw it on the photo

OK, the grass is now on, the paintjob is cleaned up a bit and the belt will be reqorked in about four minutes. I think I\'ll have this guy in my gallery tomorrow
