Fortunes of the Brush

Thanks boubi! This size is near my current limit, but maybe by the end of the decade I'll be putting freehand on 15mm cloaks. :)

One last big session today on the lady. First I added some shading to the freehand. In order to differentiate it from the rest of the cloak I used some blues. The only real downside is that it's near impossible to keep tracing the same lines without the brush slipping eventually, so I created a few touchups in the process. The result isn't quite what I had in mind, but at least its not flat anymore.

Next, its finally time for some glazes. Or as I like to call it, the last chance to really screw things up. :nailbiting: I used Reaper's clear yellow on the gold to warm it up a bit and make it look less brassy, used some red ink on her cheeks and lips, and then finally some violet ink above her eyes and in the skin shadows. I ended up glazing a couple too many layers of red ink on her cheek, but that's what practice is for. I took a before and after shot, but there's so much more red now it caused my camera to color shift a bit (at least that's my story).

Now, where did I put that base that started all of this?

I think the main lesson here is... I don't do a good job keeping up with my WIP. The project I was posting on here is long done. I ended up being a bit lazy and then running up against my deadline and making a few compromises. It was still a good learning experience. A few pics showing how it turned out:

My new project is learning how to paint w/ pointillism, aka make some textures with a lot of little dots. The cowboy hat and duster are going to be done this way. I've barely started below the waist, but I've already determined that I am very slow at this, and all those little dots... :dazed:

New goal - try to update at least once per week. We'll see how I do. :cowboy:

Diorama turned out nice and good start on the cloak and hat...just don't let the pointillism drive you insane.

I like what I see ^^
Take care of the brushes this technique will destroy their point for sure!
Ps: I find it hard to post once a week... since sometimes in 7 days I do not advance anything and sometimes in three days I advance twice as much....

At this point I am using cheap synthetics so let them be destroyed! To the point of posting though, my painting time had decreased quite a bit over the last year. I'd like to get some back, which in principle isn't too hard - I just need to figure out what other free time activity to give up.

I have to admit, there was no progress on Ellen this past week. I wasn't around much, and when I was my free time was in small chunks. I don't like painting in small chunks, but I don't mind cleaning minis 15 minutes at a time so I started work on my first garage kit. I might have to start stalking webmonkey for pointers. :) So far it's just been trimming with a hobby knife, but is about to move into filing and sanding.

I tacked her together so I could have something to play with in photoshop. While I have a few ideas I don't have an overall color scheme in mind.

that's one nice GK.
One thing I learned with GK-s is that preparation takes a LOT more time than painting if done correctly.
But if I see it right the cuts were made sensibly on this one, making it hopefully less of a hassle.

Overall it is pretty well deconstructed, with injection points that make sense. There are three injection location that make me wonder what they were thinking, but I suppose fixing such is part of the hobby.

While cleaning it I have discovered three pointy bits that were broken and glued back together at the factory. Two are barely noticeable but one is misaligned. :sidefrown:

Thanks ST.

I only have a teeny tiny update since I only got in a tiny amount of painting this week, but progress is progress. I stippled on the upper half of the duster. I'm not sure what percent I would call it, but certainly more than half-way. There are a few areas to even out and some error fixing I can see below her waist. I wasn't feeling painting skin so I decided to add some color. First I went with red on her bandana (a pretty traditional color) and then so the red wouldn't feel lonely I put some on her hat. The bandana looks somewhat flat but it's in a shadow so I'll have to deepen the shadows rather than add highlights.

Next I worked on her jeans. I started with the blue that I used for her eyes but that was waaaay too intense. After desaturating it I blocked in the colors to see how it would look. I may texture the jeans as well, but I'm not sure at the moment. The color was still hard to judge next to the white primer on her chaps so I also blocked in a base color for her chaps. I thought about freehand, but for the moment went with a traditional color. This mini is turning into an exercise in painting as many browns as possible. Currently I'm at:

  1. Duster & hat
  2. Gloves/belts/boots
  3. Hair
  4. Chaps
  5. Wooden gunstocks
Maybe I'll find another item to paint brown before it's all done.
