Forum of Doom hacked apparently ...

Got a mass e-mail sent to me by some hackers over at the forum of doom for Heresy miniatures. Went to the forum and it seems like the did indeed get hacked.

Looks like someone was being a butt today. Hopefully they had it backed up. I\'m sure they must have. Damn aggrivating to have kids playing around like that.

assclowns is the word! those guys work hard enough as it is. the last thing they have to do is clear up some mess created by some dickweed with some knowledge of computers and too much time on his/her hands

yeah I noticed too. Got some wierd e-mails (haven\'t opened them) which were suposed to come from Forum of doom and when I cheched the FoD was shut down... Nasty buggers (the hackers I mean ofcourse) go bug your old man and keep your paws of great forums that are none of your bussiness (which is quite a polite translation of what i actually wanted to say :innocent:

Come on! Cut them some slack. Without hacking their only other source of recreation would be their chronic masturbation.

And going blind would bugger their ability to hack.....

this is a note from Heresy on their yahoo group....

----------------------------------------
Hi all!

Bad news first then - the Forum of Doom got hacked again, this time
not a worm, it was done deliberately by some bored german teenagers
(I assume teenager). Apparently declaring themselves to be members
of \"team Infinity\" (http://www.inf.hitdemon.com) they have wiped the
database etc and replaced it with a charming message exulting in
their work. The main site was not affected, so I assume it was some
sort of weakness in the version of phpbb2 I was running. If any of
my german customers can find out more info for me, there are some
clues to follow: fortunately, Artemis Black was browsing the forum
as it was hacked, spotted the weird new member name and noted the
IP. The IP address, 134.76.122.71 can be traced to a german
university and the webaddress/ip thingy of dfnhome171.gwdg.de. This
led to:

Georg-August-Universität
Wilhelmsplatz 1 (Aula)
37073 Göttingen
Tel. +49 (0)551 / 39-0
Fax +49 (0)551 / 39-4135
poststelle@uni-goettingen.de

Not that I expect to get anywhere with this line of enquiry, but you
never know, I\'ve emailed them and we\'ll see if they can help. Anyone
who knows about this sort of thing please do email me at the regular
address if you can help track the person down, or advise me as to
what the security issue was. andy@heresyminiatures.com

Of course, the tech support poeple have gone home so I have to wait
until tomorrow to find out if the database can be restored via some
handy back-up or not...if not we\'ll unfortunately have to reboot the
FoD

The Good News:

Salute 2005 is on Saturday! We\'ll be there (maybe not awake, but
definitely there), just opposite the main door and slightly to the
left, next to Ainsty Casting and our friends Hasslefree Miniatures!
We\'re madly casting stuff still, but if anyone wants to place an
order to pick up on the day, do let us know by thursday!

The Netherlord is really on its last legs now: the moulds are almost
dead and the flash is becoming quite unsightly - this is definitely
your last chance to order one of these masive demons. I\'ll be
replacing it with some new sculpts later this year, all going well!

More news soon!

Why would someone want to hack the FoD anyway? It\'s not such a large forum that it would attract a lot of comment, I really don\'t think it was so well protected that it was seen as a challenge and I do not believe that my favourite barbarian sculptor was on bad terms with too many people.... seriously, I could only imagine some scriptkiddies toying around to show they are \"ultra-1337\"...

Just checked my mail. Team Inifnity, eh? After a little look around, yes, they seem like scriptkiddies who basically get off on their incredibly funny \"hacking\".

Youll probably find that they wernt doing it because its a big hack, but purely because they can. Ill put ten quid on it that theyre desktop image is Lara Croft with her clothes airbrushed out, and that they still find typing 55378008 into their calculator and turning it upside down \"the height of comedy\".

There are exploits in previous versions of phpBB. Basically the old code doesn\'t validate some of the inputs correctly, so a script kiddie can enter code and have it execute. Supposedly this has been fixed in the most recent versions of phpBB.

So if you have a site that uses phpBB, go download the newest update and reinstall. Or spend some money and use Invision or vBulletin or something. :p

Translation for the non-british non-worldly folk out there.... a \"quid\" is a british pound. Ten of them is about $20 american dollars, or $50,000 canadian dollars.

Let\'s see:

1. Doom has just had another release as a video game.

2. FoD propably pops up when you google for doom forum

3. FoD is not talking about their favorite pastime - first person shooting games.

But games do not make kids violent. Otherwise we would all be running down the street eating vitamins and chasing ghosts.

Nah, sadly the truth is far more boring. Some guys here at work want to set up a forum so that they can discuss really boring and confusing geological data modelling stuff with other, OS, organisations.

Told you it was boring!;)

Thanks to Kep for supplying the answer, most useful!

...maybe I could find a way to hack the CMoN forum to increase my post count!!

Im pretty regular on the FoD.

Its back up and working now all be it without the old content, which is being worked on.Hopefully it will be re-inserted in time.

If you get the email be sure to run a checker. There was apparently a trojan in the email.

Also apparently these nice guys tried a federal site so the ip addresses are under investigation.
