Coopers is a brand name so they make lots of different types. Their most popular and most widly avaliable is Coopers Best Extra Stout, which is the one I have had and did enjoy.

Re: all American beers being crap. Not at all true. All American Macrobrewed beers may be. Sierra Nevada Mentioned earlier has some of the best beers I have ever head. Dogfishhead as well. There are tons of other great ones. Great Lakes Brewing comes to mind as something more accesable.

What are some good Australian beers? I am a big fan of dark beers. I like stouts and brown ales (like newcastle). So if there any of these down under and are available in california I would like to try them.

But you do have lots of really good stuff too, if you look beyond the big breweries. I often drink American beer and I\'m seldom disappointed. Never tried the stuff you listed, though...

true, right now I\'m having a very good pale ale by a company called Boont. There\'s also red tail ale anchor steam. A lot of microbreweries put out some very good beer.

Had a Full Sail Pale Ale once that tasted like that. But add in a squeeze of skunk musk. Worst. Beer. Ever.

The best Aussie beers are Cooper\'s Sparkling (South Australian), James Boag\'s Lager (or any James Boag (Tasmainian) beer is great) and Cascade\'s (Tasmainian) premium beers. The Tassie (Tasmainian) beers are excellent and have no chemicals added. This means no nasty hangover if you decide to drink too many.

Four XXXX beer (Castlemaine Qld), Toohey\'s, Carlton, Crown Lager and Victoria Bitter are all generic beers. I personally love VB and Carlton Draft beer.

Automaton was right when he said that no Aussies drink Fosters. It\'s a shite beer that is only really an export beer. Most Aussies stick to the local stuff.

I think it was the Extra Stout, yes... And, Einion... I wasn\'t that drunk at the time, but me, my girlfriend and a friend of ours tried a whole bunch of new arrivals. A bit hard to remember which was which now a month or so later...

One of my favourite American Breweries is Flying Dog from Denver (I think). Gonzo Imperial Porter and Double Dog are the two beers I\'ve tried from them and they\'re both excellent. Gets you drunk pretty quickly, though, as they\'re both in the 10% region.

Coopers make some decent beers. I bought a pack the other week. Can\'t remember exactly what it was but it was about 6.5% and very tasty

Kiwis make some good beers but the best are produced by tiny breweries and are pretty difficult to get even in NZ.

Someone asked about dark beers - stouts etc. Have a try of Black Mac or Monteith\'s Black. Monteith\'s also make a knockout dark ale called Dopplebock which is lovely.

If you can find it, try Tuatara. Everything I\'ve tried by them has been excellent, but they make a particularly good porter.

TaaKawa is worth a try too...
It\'s brewed from entirely indigenous ingredients so tastes slightly different to traditional beers.

Best generic lagers are Monteith\'s NZ and Steinlager Pure. Tui, Speights and Export Gold are all mass produced pond water!

Not really, you see whilst the Ozzies call their beers \'bitter\' and \'ale\' really they are all lagers. Oh, sure they come in all these different colours, but they are ALL fizzy and taste like lager.

Bwahaha! So true! James and I are about one step away from being total CAMRA nerds, so Aussie beer confused us mightily. We did find some good ones tho, especially the more boutique, micro-brewery stuff. Foster\'s was just Bud in a bigger can, as far as I can remember. But I went to college in the town where they make Sierra Nevada, so I was a bit spoiled by the available quality.

And the fact that such quality was dirt cheap for us.

Yeh I knew that, I also know that Burton has some of the nicest pubs in the UK and that the majority of the Burton population work in the breweries (or at pirreli tyres.), either large or small ones.. My mum used to work as a teacher there and we got crap loads of booze at christmas each year

Locally that is usually how we refer to American beers. (again talking about the generic Bud\'s Strohs Coors crap, and the fact that many of the Detroit bars water down their draft)

I am pretty sure the company that makes Arrogant Bastard uses a demon as their logo and they make some great beers. They can be a bit bitter but they are pretty damn good. I am a big fan of the Double Bastard brand. Great stuff.
