Foundation Paint and Thinners

More of a heads up incase anybody else was going to try it. I just went to mix up a pot of the Necron Abyss Foundation paint ready to pop into my airbrush. As I had some I thought I\'d use Tamiya Acrylic Thinners and I recall reading somewhere that a 50/50 mix works OK...

Well all I can say is don\'t! The two had some weird reaction and ended up thickening into something reminesent of rubbery lumpy custard. Thankfully I\'d accidently bought a second pot of paint as I forgot I already had some so that\'s now mixed up ready.

Well I have a question out of genuine curiosity, why would you use tamiya thinner? Does it produce better results?

If I recall it smelled a lot like rubbing alcohol which I experimented with way back when and it seemed to gum everything up when I used mini paint instead of the regular model paint (Tamiya, Gunze etc.).

Is the Tamiya product worth the expense to use with other paint? I quit experimenting long ago and have stuck with water but if you\'ve got some reccomendations I would love to hear!

Yes you are correct Tamiya Thinner is alcohol based. I\'ve used it with Vallejo paint before without any hassle, basically it dries quicker when using it out of an airbrush in comparison to thinning with water, which ultimately means you can recoat more quickly.

Well I poked it again this morning and it now looks like curdled milk, slightly rubbery. I did consider putting it onto a radiator to dry it out until it dawned on me that it likely has a low combustion point (whoomph). :flame:

Will be interesting to see what happens to it by the end of today!
