Hello,

I just wanted to know if anyone knew a program similar to Army Builder but free ;) ?

Thanks in advance for your help :)

Army builder basically added up unit costs and generated a roster, is that right? If so, wouldn\'t it be an alternative to just use Excel or Open Office?

Though to be honest I was thinking about coding a program like that.... don\'t hold your breath though. However, should I decide to finally do it, I will be sure to tell you guys first ;)

Well then you already have a number one fan lol :D !

Excell is less fun than Army Builder and it doesn\'t know the 40K rules and everything :)

Don\'t get your hopes up ;) If I should ever actually code the program I will not include any Warhammer rules, statistics, point values or whatever, simply because I am pretty sure that GW would hit me with a Cease and Desist or something like that... some forums have been hit by GWs legal department because the members posted point costs.

I don\'t know. I have no real knowledge about any of that law stuff either ;) Maybe vince has an opinion on this....?

Besides the legal stuff, I don\'t have the codices and I\'m not going to buy them all for an open source project.
However, what I had in mind would be modular - allowing you to write a file with stats so it can be interpreteted by the program. Would be my first bigger project too. I think I could include statlines for the \"free\" games, like Void 1.1, and games that provide the stats freely, like Confrontation...
Man, I sound like I\'m going to do it.... let me reiterate: Don\'t get your hopes up ;) If your lucky, I\'ll do it \"on the side\" to learn a little for my Java exam.

http://thegreatuncleanone.com is a good web based army builder for Warhammer Fantasy, but it doesn\'t do other gaming systems.

There is an Open source in java. It\'s called JArmyTool. It doees not have an army definitions so you have to build one for your army. JArmyTool has a UI for it so it is easy enough to do.
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/u/pjlehtim/jArmyTool/

and they are in a re-write but no activity over a couple of year. Currently their rewirte is not functional.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/jat2/

There there is a free PC/Windows only version that is
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/WH_RollCall/

There are army definitions but not all are updated.

In sort, if you are willing to create your own army definitions both are good, but do take some work

I belive reading somewhere Wolf Lair did not have licence they got around the problem by downloading the army definitions during the install.

i dont know if already explained yet or not however... army builder also makes sure you do not choose something for a unit that is not allowed and have atleast two troop choices and one HQ... basicly it just helps you not accidently give something a weapon you\'re \"not allowed\" and keeps track of overall point costs
