Imagine there\'s a little German fellow who scored the chance to visit his western neighbours. Surely America would welcome him with open arms, but where exactly would he go? What would be an interesting place for him to visit?
I\'m not looking for tourist places. I mean, he\'s not looking for tourist places. Well, he\'s me and I\'m tired of talking in third person. I am not only looking for places that cater to tourists, just places that would be a blast to visit. New York? Maybe have a look at the Las Vegas casinos (don\'t worry, I\'m not going to spend much money there.... gambling is not my thing)?
MAYBE (and that\'s a big maybe) my time frame will allow me to visit to Gen Con Indy. I could buy a one-day ticket on site, right?

PS: Title completely unrelated.

No you don\'t! The big brands are terrible but there\'s plenty of good stuff from smaller breweries! I have a bottle of Red Seal Ale in the fridge, for instance. It\'s from California and is just great!

It was a broad generalization. Most people don\'t try the good stuff, or can\'t even find it. In many places you can\'t find one good beer in a bar.

I am lucky enough to live in Harrisburg, Pa, and while is not a particularly large or interesting city, we are blessed with 2 microbreweries, Troeggs and Appalachian Breweries. Troeggs is certainly the better of the two. They make one of my favorite IPAs. Closer to Philadelphia there is a brewer called Weyerbacher, they make killer ales and stouts. Their Blithering Idiot barleywine is great, and their Old Heathen Stout rules.

Other than that, I really dig Stone\'s stuff, out of CA, especially their Arrogant Bastard Ale. I also had some great double IPA from Great Divide in CO.

Mosch - No beer? Blasphemy! I took a week trip to Germany just to drink your beer!

@Jake
Well if you come upon anything from Flying Dog Breweries in Denver you should definitely try it out! Their Gonzo Imperial Porter is one of the best Porter/Stout type beers I have ever tried! Very potent stuff! :D

Now, what was this thread about? :innocent:

Never mind. I really asked for it, considering what I put as a title :D

Jake, just think: I don\'t like the German beer which people tell me is the best beer in the world. How would I ever like American beer? :D

Well, I guess it depends on which German beer you are referring to - Beck\'s is poor in my opinion, whereas Spaten makes quite a few nice varieties. I had a rauchbier once that was to die for, but I can\'t recall the name of the brewery.

There are too many good American microbrews to list, but two of my favorites are New Belgium Brewing Company\'s Fat Tire Ale from Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Shiner Bock from the Spoetzl brewery in Shiner, Texas.

As far as things to see in the States, it depends on what you like. If you like the urban scene, New York, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Seattle, Los Angeles, or San Francisco are probably your best bets. Las Vegas is OK if you are into gambling or shows, but otherwise it gets old fast.

If you want to see natural scenery that the States are famous for, the places listed above probably wouldn\'t be your best bet.

Mount Rushmore is pretty damn cool.

This summer, we are going to the southwest...Grand Canyon, Hoover Damn, Worlds largest ball of twine, etc.

Almost every state has something very cool to visit. Even here in Iowa, we have great Effigy Mounds, built by the Native Americans...and the Mississippi River, etc.

Here in California - LA SUX! San Francisco is GORGEOUS and very interesting. The wine country, where I live is very beautiful and wine tasting is fun. Yosemite is like no where else on earth. Death Valley, in spite of it\'s name is very beautiful. Especially this time of year if you\'re lucky enough to catch the desert when it blooms. Skiing in the Sierra Mountains is really good too. The fine wines aside, there are some really good beers that come from here. Anchor Steam, Downtown Brown and MANY microbreweries.

Try Colorado

If your looking for a little bit of everything try Colorado.

Fly into Denver for a cool city that\'s less expensive then New York or LA. From Denver it\'s a quick drive (about an hour) to Rocky Mountain National Park, which has some of the best camping, hicking, mountain views etc.

On top of that, Boulder (Between Denver and Rock Mountain) is a great college town thats fun to walk around in.

Hope this helps

PS
Denver/Boulder/Ft Collins) area has the best beer in the US. (New Belgium, Boulder Beer, Flying Dog, Odells among many others)

When would you be coming and for how long.. seansons make a big impact on places you might want to visit..

Also do you want brite lights and big citys or good ol Americana.

being born and raised in las vegas, i\'d have to say only go there if you know people who know the town: the cool places to hang out and the places to avoid. Alot of it is who you know.

Actually come to Cincinnati Ohio and you can get a tour of Iron WindMetals.. :D

OK thats All I got.. unless you come during the summer and then you could go to a Reds Game.
