You can\'t compare this to what they will sell in their boxed sets. This is a starter set which contains 2 playable armies! No gamer worth their name will use anyone of these miniatures (except maybe some of the one piece goblins) in their real army. This is not a box for miniature painters or collectors, this is a box for those who want to get to play as soon as possible.

They do look static on their own, but the painted up armies in my LGS looks pretty nice actually. Not as bad as I had imagined. The different posing makes it more dynamic.. the sum is greater than the parts. Definately the best starter set GW has ever released.

They certainly aren\'t any worse and you\'ve put pictures of really shit paintjobs up there! The Heroquest minis were pretty nifty:
HEROQUEST MINIS!
As for SC, this was pretty good:

And I bet I could do those androids justice too - they\'re still better than the latest Androsynths from UM...

As for my Harlequins, I was robbed! They picked some right garbage that year.....

I just picked up my copy of Heroquest from my parents.

No bloody minis in it! The zombies and skellies were class as well.

Harumph!!:(

Interestingly, the last free model to come with WD was Aenur, the sword of twilight. This was to mark the release of the Mordheim game and is a really great sculpt.

It now retails at £7 Aenur

I think its pointless to judge GWs quality on these minis, the starter box minis are generally single part as they are concentrate on getting the most minis onto the sprues. I would say the people who buy the starter sets are more interested on how many minis they get rather than how they can be posed etc. This is only in the starter sets though, the boxed regiments/squads continue to be multi-part and (IMHO) very nicely done

They were simply the first pictures I found on the internet. I would say also that those heroquest minis are pretty hit and miss to me. The gobos are complete shite IMO while I like the zombies.

In the end though I would say oh well, who cares! If you don\'t like them I guess you wont be buying the White Dwarf for them. If you were buying the White Dwarf anyway it\'s not like you had to pay extra.

If you have been following GW since 1998 you will notice a strange phenomenon.
Back in 1998 all plastic models were 1 piece, boring, static models. GW - through White Dwarf - announced a revolution was coming! The Empire Soldiers, Chaos Warriors, Night Goblins and Skaven boxed Regiment sets were released, with Warhammer 40k equivalents following. These boxed sets were £10, were multi-part (torso, legs, 2 arms, head) and had many extras. Over the last couple of years GW has been reversing it\'s position. For example see the 2 piece Lizardmen sets.
I really hate this. Of course there is the argument that it\'s easier for new players, making the kits easy to assemble, but it drives away people who have been playing for a while. Making the plastic regiment sets less multi-part just makes identikit armies and makes converting harder/more time consuming. GW\'s turnaround on plastics is annoying and frustrating for me. When they released the multi-part regiments I got bloody excited (I was much younger :p ) With these new plastic sets I\'m becoming sad.

Sorry I cant resist, I see what you mean about, them being for the starter set, and being one piece, one will be able to set it all up quickly, however these 2 minis are not good :D well the goblins ok I suppose.
Now, GW new plastics box sets, ie Brettonian men at arms, catachan, and imperial guard, are frigging fantastic in my opinion, and allow a certain amount of individuality to each mini, especially the imperial guard box, love \'em, and I am converting some as we speak :D

IMHO I think GW are not doing themselves any favours by pushing these out even as a starter set.

The set comes with the Spider Riders as I mentioned earlier and there are a few other individual models in the set that might be better.

However on a sales point of veiw concidering WD can be purchased in Newsagents across the country I would say putting shody castings with little detail hardly promotes a hobby let alone encorage somebody to want to buy more.

Yes I do like the goblin to an extent but I am hoping that some of the others are better than this. The dwarf on the other hand well I think enough has been said about that already.

Yes, I agree War Griffon, its certainly not going to inspire the young ones, or us old \'ens, putting this sort of standard out on public display.
Pull your finger out GW, we know what standard of mini can be made now, and we want to see it, and I for one, want to see it in your shops.
Many of the competitors have made the step upwards, and are selling top of the range mini\'s :D

Well I like them. The gobbo is a nice mini. It\'s a very characterful little sculpt. I admit the dwarf is not great. He is very static and some of the detailing is a bit shallow and not so well defined, but even with these small problems, he is perfectly fine as a miniature for a gaming force.

GW is still the leader in the plastics market IMO. The minis such as these free ones are basic but they paint up quite nicely and it is enjoyable to paint up something that is not way to overcluttered with unnecessary detail.

the fact that these are on the WD\'s in newsagents does little to change opinions about this as a hobby with the wider public; they may as well have given away a toy catapault.
At the very least having a seperate shield on the dwarf wouldn\'t have made it much harder to assemble.........

and GW may be the leaders in plastic 28mm mini\'s right now, probably because there\'s not many others going it (lack of competitoin - can get away with it) , but in the injection moulded plastics world they are simply pants.

i think GW are taking the easy way

i think they could make much better models.but choose not to as they know that many newbies will buy there new games.

they should do more models like the gotrek and felix models for painters

i think GW needs to notice that quite alot of people like painting.they should do more on painting in WD not just berginners stuff

oh btw in the new WD have you seen the painting guides for the new models
they dont even use the correct names of the paints:D

Why aren\'t people allowed to say anything critical of GW without it being called \'GW bashing\'? I have just been rubbishing an AlphaForge mini on another thread and there is no way anyone is going to accuse me of \'AlphaForge Bashing\' (Except for Supervike when he sees this post).
It is not illegal/heretical/blasphemous or anything else to say you don\'t like something about GW....or any other manufacturer for that matter.
IMO it\'s too easy cry \'GW bashing\' and by implication suggest that criticism is ill-considered and simply biggoted.
IMO, that is a shit dwarf....:D
