Lately I've noticed a few different posts on this and other forums asking about paint agitators and even a few threads detailing the horrors of using agitators that ended up ruining their paints after some time had passed due to corrosion, etc.
So, I wanted to share what I use for agitators, which is free as long as you have some around.
Simply put I keep all of the pieces of white metal miniatures that I remove in a little baggy. Sometimes it's an unusually large piece of flash or it could be an entire base that i removed from an integrated miniature through careful use of a jeweler's saw. This is what I make my agitators out of.
Just take some end nippers and cut some small chunks. Usually I try for about 2mm cubed. I'll put a couple of these pieces into a bottle and use them as my agitators. It's cheap and the metal has never harmed any of my paints. Some of my paints are years old (3-4) and they still work perfectly with no discoloration due to the added agitators.
As long as you have a supply of white metal around you have free agitators!

Another fun side effect of having a large supply of white metal castoffs handy is that friends can utilize them for their own projects. A friend of mine is a security researcher and he used a bag of my pewter/white metal leavings to make the metal slug for this video:
