Freehand NMM details?

Hey folks, I am painting a studio mcvey Broga, and I want to paint some NMM details on the bare parts of his armor, as seen on the back of fluffy's troll axer, on his plate area: http://coolminiornot.com/168572. Any tips or tricks? What color should I start with, a dark blue, a medium grey? I am not sure. Here is the part that will have the details painted.

do you want a clean cartoony look or somthing a little more grimey?

A quick reply is that for a slightly dirty look use something like Charadon Granite; it being of a brown tint. For a cleaner, reflecting a bit of the sky look use something like Astronomican Grey which has a blue tint.
