freehand question

Hey friends! A little question for all of you.

I have a logo here on my pc that I want to paint on space marines tank. Is there a way to have a technique like some sort of carbon copy to transfer this logo to the surface of the tank? It\'s a pretty complex and symmetric logo, so it\'s going to be very difficult painting this totally freehand.

Tattoo paper.....?

Hi Corvus, in my local PC store you can buy paper for your ink-jet printer that allows you to print your own tattoos. I haven\'t seen the method for getting them onto your skin, but I assume its like those temporary tattoos you can get that you put in water and then you slide onto your skin?

It\'s a long shot, but they may work like the standard GW transfers ??? You could then matt varnish over the top \'cos I guess it may look a little shiny.

Thanks tooshy, but I\'m not really planning on creating some kind of transfer to stick on the mini.

No, I want to put the outlines on the mini and do the painting by hand. Maybe simple carbon paper will do the trick on the (white) primed mini, I don\'t know...

try painting on the logo then,when the paint is still wet,put the painted side in contact with the mini.

The only way I can think of is; with a fine sharp drawing pencil sketch it in then, paint in the outline.
Not the easiest solution but you never know.

I\'d suggest tracing it in pencil first then painting over that.
Scale to the right size.
Print it out, or trace over on your screen using grease-proof paper and a pencil.
Turn the paper over and trace over lines a couple of times with asoft (BB) pencil.
Place paper on miniature and rub over the lines with something to transfer the pencil lead to the tank.

Alternatively.
Look at the rough shape of the picture you want to do and get the proportions clear in your mind. Lightly mark out the shape with very thin dark paint on your whatever. Concentrate on getting the proportions right.... Once this is about right then go over and block it in. Fix problems. Apply details....
Whatever you do, don\'t just try and paint the thing straight on in one go.
Unless you\'re michaelangelo or whatever, it ain\'t going to work.

Freehand Question

The easiest way I have found to transfer art for freehand work is simply print out the image you want to reproduce to scale. Then with an x-acto knife cut out small areas on the paper and mark through the holes (areas cut out) onto the tank with a fine pencil. Then just connect the dots and paint over. I have found this way enables me to keep the image proportions correct while still \"freehanding\" the whole thing.

I think they dot to dot idea is really good. It sounds similar to something they use to transfer patterns in pumpkin carving.

Aon14\'s idea is good also. The graphite transfer would work pretty slick.

Keep us updated on what you use, and how it worked.

I also was thinking about something similar to aon\'s idea... I think graphite will easily stick to the grainy surface (because of the primer) of the mini...

I\'ll try to write a new topic when I will do this job (only not sure if or when I will do it )

You could always print the original out on cardstock and then make a stencil out of it for use on the vehicle.

Sorry Corvus, I got the wrong end of the stick. I didn\'t realise you still wanted to paint your logo freehand. I think the tracing paper idea could work.

In the store where I just quit, we sell blank transfer paper, you just copy anything on it with a laser-printer and voila!! Instantly any transfer you want.

Dont know for sure if this is what Tuubje is referring to but here in the states you can get decal transfer paper that you can run through certain types of printers to make your own wet transfer decals -

Corvus, you can buy water slide decal paper for inkjets. You print out your design then varnish over it, you can then use it like any other water slide transfer (GW etc).

It comes in clear and white, you could print out your outline, transfer it and paint in the rest freehand.

It use it for making decals for model cars and it works pretty well, it is glossy though so you\'d have to matt varnish over it.

I get mine from here http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/clear%20water-slip%20decals.htm but I\'m sure you can find a supplier near you.

Yup that\'s the one but he needed freehand, so I say, go with the \"kalkeerpapier\".

you could trace the outline onto some tracing paper, then apply it to some card, then cut it outwith an Xacto knife and voila, a stencil! you then put the stencil in place, mask off the rest of the mini, and apply white or black primer.

now i am sure i saw on one of those silly life style shows a method for this.

you can get some toner or alcohol (i\'m not sure what the stuff was) and you can get a magazine pic or photocopied pic. or even newsprint and you transfer the ink on to whatever.

that way you get a picture (reversed) onto the tank then you just paint over it.
it has a name too but i can\'t stomach those shows so i didn\'t catch it.
