Freezing Paint

When I worked for Ral Partha, we had cases of paint freeze in shipping.. UPS left them in the cold to long.. once thawed the paint seperated and became clumpy almost jell like.. the whole lot was ruined.

If it were me Id not do it.

I daubt it-ok, it would prevent the water in the color to evaporate and the color to dry, but it would most probably break open the container if it\'s too filled up (ice tends to get more volume than water) and will still tend to divide the water part from the color pigments, leaving you with a glass half filled with some kind of powder and water over it:p

Anyway you really could make an experiment if you find the time and don\'t forget the paint in the fridge.

Don\'t freeze paint. Most water based paint is not freeze-thaw stable. The usual result of frozen paint is lumpy cottage cheese like consistancy or having the solids (pigment) seperate from the vehicle and petrifi on the bottom of the can. That being said, not all paint is the same. I have seen paint ruined in just one freezing and other brands come through several freezes just fine. Even if a paint seems ok, mixes properly, has good consitancy, it may have reduced performence like poor adhesion. If you do decide to test a bottle let it freeze and thaw several times before risking the rest of your paints. also don\'t be suprised if some colors handle freezing better than others.
