Granddad!
...actually it\'s romans I\'m more interested in, 54mm to make it even more um.. more interesting. I\'ve had a customer, make some preliminary enquiries about a \"Roman chess set\" using 54mm figs.
So I thought I\'d ask around and see if anyone had any ideas where to get them from.
Also any ideas what to use for the various chess pieces, he wasn\'t specific about which time period/Emperor at the moment, nor opposing forces. I was thinking about Bodicia. Any suggestions would be great at this stage

yeah that\'s about as far as I got..
only thing is I don\'t really have any specifics at the mo, he may have a particular Ceaser in mind
If it was 28mm he wanted it\'d be easy, I\'d have just used Foundry mini\'s
I\'ll have to check out Historex I think

Hi Mick, Roman subjects in \'54mm\' (or as close as they get these days, usually a little over 60mm) abound in the historical-mini world - Andrea, Soldiers and Pegaso have a host to choose from.

Because of space (and cost) limitations though it might be an idea to look at purpose-made chess sets. You might not be able to get them unpainted but stripping and repainting shouldn\'t be a problem since we do that sort of thing ourselves anyway. I\'m pretty certain I\'ve seen Roman sets for sale in gift shops in the UK that were around 1/32 scale, a quick Google search should help you locate a source.

Well, there\'s this wacky bit for Romans v. Gauls:

http://www.pegasomodels.com/30-001_en.asp

This was discussed in depth back in May. One thing that came out of it is that Bishops should be standar/banner bearers based on the history of the game and etimology of the piece. (unless you prefer elephants)

Thanks for your help guys
fortunately he only wants them in metallics ie: gold for one side, silver for the other, so I dont have to go onto loads of details about the right colors for this or that
:phew:
@vince: that chess set is wicked

I know he was having a bit of computer trouble awhile back, but I had thought he resolved that. Maybe he is just taking a much needed break. :)
