Hi all! Been a member of this site for a while, but just plucked up the courage to post some pics. One of them is a wee model of Fu Manchu from Ironclad that I was quite happy with, but seems to be scoring lower than all the rest of my submissions and I was wondering why? I accept the base isn't great, but I thought the freehand on the back was quite good. Any suggestions as to how I could have made the miniature more appealing?

One thing you could have done for higher score is to bring more highlight into the black areas, also sometimes people just look at the top picture and don't go down to the second one. I really like your freehand (somewhere 7 to 8) and I would personally put your other work as (5-6). But then I do think I am quite hard in judging the work that people put up including my own work...

Also as yourself point out is too improve the base, this makes it a lower score (4 or so) and degrades the overall score you receive. The base is as important as the figure and if possible it is very good to make the base draw the eyes to the figure and put as much effort and time into the base as the rest.

Hope it helps, and one way to improve is to start a WIP thread and get feedback on your work as you paint it, It have helped me to improve a lot.

Thanks! The black is quite subtle and does lack depth, I guess. The other thing I need to do is get a better camera! :)

One thing I realise about this figure is that it's not a dynamic or massively detailed figure, (I have a copy myself) And as such it really requires some extra "oomph" to get it noticed.
Since Chinese Mandarin style clothing is often depicted as being Silk painting miniatures to represent that material will require additional lighting in much the Same way NMM does, higher contrast and reflective surfaces and White highlights.
For the black silk I'd have used Vallejo Model Colour Dark Prussian Blue as the first highlights reserving the black for shadow tones, then adding slight glazes of blue to upper surfaces for the light reflections.
Knowing how small the figure is I'm highly impressed with the free hand dragon you've done neat and tidy an a good contrast to the red.
