Full Body NMM

Hi there to all who frequent the forums. This is my first foray into this area of CMON so please excuse any errors as I try to get the hang of it. You seem to be a pretty sensible bunch so I ask you this ........What do you think of this mini....my first attempt at painting NMM over the whole of a figure.

Yeah, I\'ve seen a couple of these guys you\'ve done - I think they\'re pretty good!

I\'m not expert in NMM, but it looks fairly convincing to me
I like \'em all.

I saw these earlier and I voted like 8-9s on them. I think the bases don\'t work as the figure is more geared towards sci-fi.

Checking..your minis are at about 7 Rating which is a total FARCE.

Don\'t take the ratings to serious. Seems some people are hatin\' hardcore.

The MNN is wonderful and I love the reds on the fabrics! Very nice. The base needs a bit of work but you are a real solid painter. I agree the scores should be higher but they will even out. Good on you for this one!

Thanks for the comments..... I wasn\'t sure if it was just me thinking that the scores were a bit on the low side. Is it worth reposting or will I just attract the same low score posting peeps?
As for the bases.... I was going for kinda ruined buildings/ rubble that have since become overgrown. The pics don\'t really show that quite as well as in real life but I can see how you would think that they are more fantasy than sci fi. Maybe be some broken pipes/ girders/ cables would help ? Any suggestions?

Doing an Ork in SENMM gold!!! Are you mad. Here\'s me thinking that doing a nice simple marine in normal gold NMM would be a challenge. All those bits of metal and pipework on an ork figure. If you haven\'t gone completely gibbering mad by the time you finish it\'ll be good to see a pic of it.

I wouldn\'t be too worried about the scores... the thing is, some of the absolute best mini on CMON start at 8.5 or so 7.5 or 8.0 is still a very good score.

People seem terrified to vote lower than a 5 for anything so the whole scoring system is very compressed.

Anyway, that wasn\'t a rant, just an observation and encouragement. I wouldn\'t bother resubmitting anything.

The NMM is very good, you seem to have hilights in all the right places and it all works well... I think to make it GREAT NMM you just need to make the shading a little deeper.

What really caught my eye though is the red on the cloak... it\'s fantastic!

I would say this is a solid 8.5 personally. Very nice.

I think you\'ve done a nice job, but my biggest issue with your NMM is that the darkest points are not dark enough. When I do gold NMM, my darkest color is usually a very dark brown (Reaper Master Series Walnut Brown actually, but Gw\'s scorched brown would work too). From what I can tell, your darkest brown is still a fairly light brown. I think with the higher contrast, you\'d see some higher scores.

I\'m doing him as though he were a golden statute. Doing all \'the right things\' but some of the detail is so small that it\'s hard to keep it from looking like a mess.

I agree with squidders the red looks stunning what colours did you use there??

I lready commented I like these guys..The odd area needs to be a little darker but not too much for the bright effect your going for..The only other thing for me is just shade the skin a little more...

also drop the grass and use barbed wire etc and add a few shading washes to the rocks to vary the colour there a bit....try snakebite leather and black thinned heavily and a touch of purpe added to the deepest areas....

seems like a lot but they are picky points..really don\'t get hung up on scores...they are nice work....

Originally I used \"swamp brown\" as a base. It\'s an old GW colour. When that ran out I mixed up my own version.... it\'s kinda like a darker reddy brown version of GW Terracotta. Once the base colour is sorted it nice and simple ... Red Gore first highlight then up to Blood red. Pure Blood Red for the top final highlight.

Thanks for all the tips for the bases... i\'ll have to look at them again and alter them accordingly.

On the matter of posting.... has anyone looked at what is the best day of the week to post a pic. If you post on first thing Sat you get lots of views and votes very quickly but it also seems that you get a lot of the peeps who vote low just for the hell of it ( from my personal experience ). is there a difference if you post say midweek?

I\'d say it doesn\'t make that much difference when you post..although school holidays are blighted with bored kids knocking scores down for something to do...

I\'d say more importantly is luck of the draw when other people post...for example post when every other model posted is 5\'s or less and a decent job stands out more and gets higher scores..post when say a GD has been held and all the winners post and your scores are generally lower as people are comparing to amazing stuff at the time...(make sense?)
In the grand scheme of things it really doesn\'t matter when posted as the scores all even out in time...just keep up the good work and fine tune a few areas as you go and you\'ll do great....And if scores are low don\'t worry about them just work on the minis to try improve the score rather than complain about scores and your painting will improve no matter what your scores do and that\'s what it\'s all about...

Possibly They are highlighted / shaded to a degree. The area of pure white is where the white highlight spot would be if the chest was plain gold armour. I suppose the areas towards the edges of the chest area could have been darker but I kept it as is as I wanted it to look like it is white; as opposed to more shading which may have made it look like a pale aluminium NMM feel.

Going back to the scores if I may.... I don\'t really care, even if it does annoy the hell out of me at times. I like the way I paint and I enjoy it. I do want to improve so that this year I may get to be a finalist at the UK GD. I entered last year but didn\'t get through the cut. Fingers crossed for 2008.

Well i heeded most of the advice that I got here and went back to do some remedial work on the bases to make them less \"fantasy \" and more industrial. They are not quite as detailed as I would have liked but then I didn\'t want to scrap the bases and start again from scratch. Anyway what do you think?

I was thinking about painting another set using metallic paints, but after a few test pieces I think i\'ll stick with NMM as I feel that I get more control over the final effect. I\'ll just have to work at it to make it look even more realistically metallic. The next set will have more detailed bases with bits of girders and chain link fencing
