well, that seals it, both you and the wife went with the snakemen.
unfortunately i dont have those citadel classics, ive been looking but they are HARD to find. ill get them eventually, along with the rackham asps and Excalibur snake amazons ive been looking for.
what i do have is the best of the rest, minis from half a dozen mfgs. you wont be disappointed. the first one should be done soon, fiollowed by some grunts, then comes the good stuff. do you think i should vary the skin patterning? i cant decide.

im glad you like the kobold hero; to be honest i kinda surprised myself with how well the sculpt turned out. its initial success kept me modeling, thats for sure.
there3s work to be done!

Cool, I like this thread. It seems however that I am the only one just painting single models with acrylics now, everyone else is sculpting, making large scale models, and trying out all sorts of new stuff!

The terrain is looking great, funnymouth. I take it those spikey bits are stalactites and stalagmites?

@ Mr.S.Marbo: Don't worry, I'm painting minis with acrylics too. :)

Cheers!

im glad im keeping it interesting. the variety is what keeps me going.
those spikes are indeed stalactites and stalagmites - in place now!
a quick update shot of the terrain:

after using wood putty to sculpt out the floor and wall details i include some additional texture by making cracks and adding some glue-chilli pepper. through experimentation i determined chilli pepper to have the most ideal properties of the other options in the spice cabinet. all i have to do now is paint and ill be done with the first set. the next batch will include pools.

I've daydreamed many a time about this kind of terrain for D&D, nice to see someone getting it done. I'm just a little jealous :) Started a new chapter in one of our campaigns last week & headed off into the Underdark for the first time, I shall just have to imagine that the squared drywipe mat is more exciting, as per usual :D

Cheers, B.

The terrain is looking like it's going to be ace, I have never done anything underground and I don't think I have seen much done like that so should be unique.

Well at least there is someone else in "my club" hehe

a small update, of sorts. ive been working hard on the snake-woman, at your request. that and my other projects are all very involved and have been soaking up my time without much in the way of progress to show. it gets kinda frustrating after a while to work on so many long term projects, and from time to tim e i just want to knock something out, substandard or not. on such a mission diggin through my pile, i came across a reaper sorcerer that i had gotten for free at one of last years cons for the "paint and take." i compleated 75% of him with loaner paints and brushes <shudder>, then tossed him in to the box when it was time for the next game. i briefly considered stripping him because of the bad prime and poor original paintwork, but i didnt really want to commit any serious amount of time to this mini. so i knocked him out as a "quick finish" with no expectations. i doubt he will see hte light of my gallery, but ill share him here as he does fit in with the "good" guys.

im pretty crappy at osl, so it was good to experiment on a piece that wasnt very significant.
edit: this photo has actually been quite helpful at pointing out the aspects of the technique and speed painting that i need to work on....

Wow, you are one busy beaver! I really like the different warbands and the tiles. I'm happy you got so much inspiration from the Stygian Depths and can't wait to see how the snakemen come out.

I'd love to see a fortune hunter warband with some steam constructs also. I bet some old clix models would work for those, rebased and painted. Cavalcade may eventually get to making them but it could be a little while.

I also think your sculpting of the kobold is really good, at least as good as the Reaper ones. Do you have any closer shots?

ways have anproject under the belt, before the last one is finished.....
my completion rate has been pretty darn good lately, in fact, if nearly emptied my WIP shelf.
i had to remedy that, so last week i prepped these fellows:
View attachment 7055\
- the complete dark mariners line, to date ( i really cant wait for the rush of new releases after cavalcade gets set up again), primed and ready to go! im going to paint these on the double, as ive got a tremendous amount of paint work to complete between now and September.

i do actually have a clix model or two i bought with just that intent, and ill probably get to them kinda soon. for now, though, these guys, the finishing touches on my snakewoman, and the pathfinder dragon need to be completed.

i could take some closer shots of the kobold i sculpted, but id be embarrassed to at this point. he was literally the very first sculpt id ever completed, even before the cloaker (which i plan on making more of), so by my standards today the sculpting is lacking. worry not, though, as i have a few sculpts that are totally original, and that i hope will be truly impressive, in the pipe line. one of them is a modular light assault construct that can swap out the limbs for different gear. should be cool when all is said and done. the biggie is a secret, for now, but i will be looking for advice from the community once ive gotten a little farther along, to maximize coolness.

lol, misadventures in painting. so im knocking out the base colors for the dark mariners, and i get the idea to mix some scaly green with a pearlescent paint i picked up, thinking it would give it a sheen. i have no experience with iridescent paints other than metallics, and i overdid it, big time. came out as a scaly green metallic paint, instead of a soft sheen - oops! i added too much. i went ahead and used it anyhow, because im not known for waisting paint.

yikes! i figure all the washes, glazes and highlights will cover it up, and i can always repaint if i hate it. didnt do what i was expecting, but i did find a way to make just about any color metallic, and it has great mixing/blending properties.could be very very cool for some sci fi minis (cherry red robots & hoverbikes!).
wash time, well see what happins

Hey funny! Wow blue glowy stuff! If your washes don't reduce the iridescent paint, hit it with dull coate or a matte sealer in between a layer or two, that should knock it down for ya.

I really like those Dark Mariner figures Funnymouth, the studio paintjobs were fantastic. I confess they're a bit too busy to want to paint myself but I shall enjoy your getting them done :)

more progress last night!
a few colorizing washes, and a wash of black.
ive started the hilighting step. ill update tonight.
View attachment 7073
once my wife saw the metallic tentacles, she insisted i keep them. seeing as how she is my resident color expert, im obliged to comply. shes never steared me wrong before. with that in mind i toyed around with the metallic testicles, to see if i could get it to work. i think it will.

very rough test (and the rest of the model is still in a very early stage), but i think its kinda neat n slimy.

i am really enjoying these models, but they are very complex. ive taken dbloods approach (studio pjs) and ill be using the detail of the sculpt to my advantage by relying on washes heavily to bring everything out, rather than fussing with every detail.

Cool terrain tiles. I saw someone do a few of these on another forum - they were very good but quite large. I always fancied doing some of these and was commisioned to do some at one stage but the company kind of fell other, so they are sitting around somewhere. You have encouraged me to pick them back up again!

The mariners are cool to, the orange colour is spot on, Look forward to seeing these done.

that reminds me, i need to post an update of the tiles. theyre great fun, each one is like a mini diorama. cant wait to finish the next batch because i should then have enough for a small game. i was hoping to update the mariners yesterday, but the hilighting of the shells is taking more time than expected. lots of work to do on them still, but i think they're shaping up nicely.

small update, with 5 minis at a time, even a simple step can become intensive. ive decided that ill work on one texture type at a time, to help manage the workload. im starting with the carapace. ive just finished a rough spot highlight on those areas and begun the next step, dark-lining (as can be seen on the cephalid telepath). i hope to get that done by tomorrow.

lol, they are fun - i really enjoy the totally wild nature of them, plus they're so unique. nothing on the market quite like them.
unfortunately im feeling a little like the painting so far has been one step forward, two steps back, with my color choices.
the bright blue still weirds me out, but im committed. i felt like the original carapace was headed in a low contrast direction, and i think i went a bit overboard with the highlighting. the dark-lining is definitely helping with the definition on the model though, which is much needed at this point in the painting process.

once i've finished lining the whole warband i'll go back to deepening the color of the carapace with glazes. right now its looking very neutral, and im going more for "in your face" vivid.
unfortunately ive got a trip coming up this weekend, so i dont think ill have much in the way of progress before next Wednesday.
