advice still needed though...

im pretty satisfied with the whitish armourplates but i dont feel that the bronze kneepad came out right, does anyone have any ideas for getting a great patina effect, mostly interested in techniques since i have lots of reference material (archaeology student) but i cant seem to transfer any of it to the mini. im looking at pics of bronzeage materials as they are quite old and have a nice patina effect.

so, comments, ideas, criticism, pointers (i tend to get blind while painting and if you see any thing "wrong" feel fre to point that out)

im working on my photoskills...

yeah i think it look good. hard to judge the head tho, but the leg looks great. one of the keys are not to rush anything. i use to think "which would make me more happy tomorrow, half the mini painted at non-perfect standard or just one object painted awesome" while painting (maybe thats why my minis take like a month to finish...)
what happened to the insane land raider BTW? ;)

from what ive seen you really are not a bad painter you know. keep it up! :)

The problem I see with the kneepad is that you can't really tell what it is supposed to be, at the moment. Maybe the patina looks somewhat realistic, but since it's so heavily patinated it is hard to tell that it is supposed to be bronze in the first place. Maybe it'll come together better when more of the mini is finished, and maybe more parts will be the same patinated bronze?

freakinacage: yes i have, i get this question alot, i undercoat using fortress grey, something ive been doing for some time now and i think its better for both dark and light colours than either black or white, a taste thing i guess.

SkellettetS: the face has just gotten a basecoat and some washes and isnt really close to being finished in like a week or so. im a really slow painter really and nowadays with studies and a kid its not like i can go much faster either, my mortifactors were speedpainted to say the least. the LR is still under construction but might se some basecoats today...

Ritual: yeah thats one of the things thats bothering me, it looks like a textbook example of patinated bronze from that age, but it doesnt look right on the mini. i dont know if it will work itself out when i get more bronze areas done or not. at the moment the shoulderpad trims and some other details will be bronze. i'll see if i cant lighten it up a bit by reapplying some bronze glaces and working the metallics a bit.

The problem with replicating complicated patterns like a bronze patina in this small scale is that even if it's spot on, it can look strange. Sometimes it's better to go for a more simplified and less life-like look, as it will be easier to interpret, and thus, paradoxically, look more life-like.

Right now it looks more like a broken blue pad than a bronze one. Speaking of realism, have you taken into account that the pad hasn't been just sitting there getting old? I'm pretty sure this guy scrapes and bumps it on a daily basis fighting some random battles in obscure places, perhaps paint some pure-bronze dents and scrapings and perhaps even edges where the patina just simply has been torn away?

hey the models a really nice one, if you are interested take a look at the photos in my wip large scale space marine sniper i sort of stumbled upon a bronze technique when i was base coating the bike for weathering see if its something like what you want to acheive its done by mixing snake bite leather with a small amount of chaos black then dry brush splotches almost like a sponge technique randomly in chaos black wait for it to dry then do the same with the snakebite leather until you get a mottled effect then dry brush lightly over with boltgun silver, hope this helps:clap:

Looking great so far! And I thought it was a blue pad. So I guess you'll need to work on that one:(

Ritual: i see that now, i reworked the pad by adding some bronze and some silver mixed with it to create a more metallic area and now it looks ok i think, i shall try to add a pic tonight if possible.

Chrome: that actually helped, by adding "scratches" and areas where the patina has been rubbed off i think i fixed it, thanks.

Cassar: i figured it out but thanks for the tip it surely will come in handy when doing the rest of the mini.

A Luna: yeah then it definitely needed some love. i fixed it now though and i will add a pic tonight....

thanks guys..

(oh and i started the freehand on the banner, its not quite there but i think it might disgust some people....)

Love the banner and how it is turning up. Are you priming each part you are painting separately?

I also like the armor. I love Plaguemarines that are painted in Death Guard's original colors.

home of the cadaver: no im priming in grey so its sort of looking unprimed since the resin is the exact same grey.
the worm infested cover just fit so well i think, but i got rid of the vagina looking mouth in the back though, have to keep it pg13 atleast.
and yeah, deathguard should be whitish i think.

thanks.

Wow. I think I just found a reason to actually purchase that model. I always liked it, since it's a really cool sculpt.
I especially like what you've done with his face...
