Game Forces Magazine

Hey guys,

just wanted to get some opinions on Game Forces (The English version). A Japanese stockist has started getting it in so I'm tempted to pick up a few issues...

Likes / Dislikes?

I'll say right off the start that I like my copies of the first issue english version, and the issue 14 Spanish and the most recent issue 16 being produced in English thanks to CMON.

But...

The pics are nice but I find the articles for the most part next to useless. Some of the in depth step by step articles are great, but for the most part I found the quick two page blurbs on some AMAZING models less than helpful. A one paragraph explanation on how an entire beautiful 70mm model was painted is just not enough for me.

However the pics are SO inspirational and excellent as stand alone content that I would buy the magazine if it had no words in it at all. It's great for me as I don't have my computer next to my painting space so mags like this are great to pick up and have a quick flip though when I need a boost of creativity. And some of the step by step stuff is very cool. It differs from the game driven mags from various producers as here painting is the SOLE focus and you get the best painters on the planet showing off their stuff. I'm sure each of the featured pieces could fill the entire magazine with a step by step process on how they did just one of their pieces. Actually that'd be something I was super interested in! Like the miniature mentor videos in magazine form.

I'd pick it up, can't be the worse thing a mini painter could buy.

I would agree with Scott on the write ups - they leave you gagging for more, but the photography of the pieces is fabulous and the sheer size of space dedicated to them makes the magazine more than worth it. Issue 17 should be here by now - where is it, arrrrgggghhhh!!!!! My impatience is killing me.

And oh yeah, compared to White Dwarf this is beyond any heights WD could even hope to aspire to, despite the brief text. And did I mention WD sucks by the way.

I agree with most things said already. I would just thumb through first to make sure the models in there are ones you are interested in. I've picked up a few that had larger scale stuff or superhero models that I wasn't interested in, which means the whole magazine becomes some nice pics of 2 or 3 models I liked.

Something you might want to consider is this publication:-

Fantasy Dimension Magazine No 4 (Don't know if there was a 1,2 or 3) Quality piece of work even if the translation from Spanish dows have a couple of "Huh" moments in it.
Nice explanations of some pieces that have graced Coolminiornot, as well as an article by one of our long term favourites Alex Castro. :tremble!::giggle::rotfl:

Yeah Mike, that mag looks cool!

I'm gonna see if the LGS can bring some in for me, if not I will order that for sure! Appreciated. And I look forward to hearing what Mr. Castro says. I am sure it's very humble piece on self reflection!
