Just a few thoughts..
From what I can see, the painting is quite good, especially the chainsword (some nice weathering), however nothing on it really screams \"I\'M HORRIBLY WELL PAINTED! LOOK AT ME!\" which is something I *think* you need with a GD Mini. well, it might not necessarily have to \'scream\' it, but it should try to stand out somehow... in the mass of all the other mini\'s something about it needs to make the judges want to take a second look at it.
it just \'feels too much like a stock standard mini to me.. perhaps some sort of basic conversion work on it (extend the banner pole and put a banner in perhaps?) or some freehand details painted on the robe to really bring the detail level up. Perhaps some sort of writing on the red strip on his robes and some sort of painted details on the kercheif around his neck? I think originality in your piece is the key.. Stock standard mini\'s still place quite regularly, but they need to be painted eye-bleedingly well IMO or have some sort of angle of originality to them (freehand & the like)..otherwise some minor conversions/additional details added here and there can make a stock mini stand out against the crowd.
I think shading/highlights that have a reasonable level of contrast between the darkest/lightests parts tend to make final cuts more often than not, so perhaps being a little bit more dramatic with your highlighting/shading could help? the cream on the robes just feel a bit flat, although it could be the pic not doing the figure justice..
Just my 2 cents..
