Games Workshop - Bleached bone

What kinds of problems are you having with it?

It can be a tricky color to use. If you don\'t water it down enough it has a tendency to dry very clumpy and uneven, more so than most colors. Also if you water it down too much it can also get very chalky so it\'s a matter of finding the right paint to water ratio.

Imparticular mixing it with Vallejo Model Colour - German Camoflague Black Brown (note i havent tried it with other Vallejo paints in this line and hence might just have a bad reaction to somthing in the Vallejo paint) and giving me an extremely uneven and chalky appearance.

Have you had similar problems like this or mixing into Valejo in gerneral with it? or do i have a bad one?

Thanks, Andy

I wouldn\'t say you have a bad one per say. Make sure you mix the paint in well enough, also try adding some medium in there. As far as the chalkiness and uneven finish, as I said before your either watering it down too much or not enough.

I havent done anything different to my normal paints that have went on without problem so it seems strange, if it helps whenever the German C. Black Brown had the bleached bone in it it was fine, but whenever i had more of the Bleached bone whenever i mixed it on my palette they seemed to almost split into 3 layers and i had to keep stirring them up to keep the colout consistant, perhaps whenever i applied to the mini the paint has started to split slighty.

No worries, i was just wandering if people had ever had similar problems.

Every pot of Bleached I have had has been an odd consistency. Almost rubbery. I have actually given up on this colour and now use P3\'s Mennoth White base in it\'s place. So it may not just be you. When I did use Bleached I didn\'t really water my paints down much at all, so didn\'t see a chaulky problem, just an odd thick drying problem.

I find the colour slightly tricky to use, but nowadays I tend to use it sparingly to add highlights in reds and browns so it\'s not so bad. Kommando Khaki is very similar in shade, and seems to be much easier to use if that\'s any help.

One thing that I\'ve been doing recently is to purchase my paints straight from a GW store in the hope that they haven\'t been sat on a shelf for months. I\'ve had a couple of paints that have started to \'go off\' and I\'ve ended up having to add water to them in an effort to resuscitate them - I have a feeling that Bleached Bone is probably more susceptible to going off than others.

Not that this may apply to your paint however :D

I\'ve never been able to paint bone properly. I didn\'t think about the paint consistency. Maybe that\'s hindering me!
Good to know other people have issues with the paint though!

I used to find GW bleached bone abit off and on, I switched the colour to vallejo bone from the game colour range, and ivory from the model colour.

You have a bad one. Bleached bone is one of GW\'s better colors for coating and diluting.

I\'ve been using this more than usual over the past couple of weeks due to some dark angels veterans (robes)

I\'ve found that it thins quite nicely, and also found the result can entirely depends on the layer below. I use a layer of kommando khaki then bleached bone over that.

In the past i have used it over foundation white which resulted in a super smooth result

It\'s a thick, sticky paint. That said, it usually finds it\'s way onto every mini I paint.

I do find that I need to add water to the pot every couple weeks. I go through Bleached Bone and Skull White more quickly than any other color. Mostly just \'cause they dry out so quickly.

It\'s worth keeping some P3 Menoth Base or one of the Valejo or Reaper Ivory colors. Sometimes I find Bleached Bone to come out a little green.

Still, though... it\'s a great color.
