Gameswork shop ink VS home made?

Just wanted some opinions on inks....

In the past I have used the games workshop range of inks and have been pretty happy with them but the color range is pretty limited. I have seen people making there own inks and would really like to know more about the process to create my own. Im about to paint 100 miniatures and need to make up some specific color inks for the project.

Long time lurker and finally joined up!.

Hi Koldsweat, GW hasn't sold ink for many years now. Do you mean their current range of washes? If so, do a search for "magic wash" recepies and you should find plenty of pointers. Their old range of washes, I recently bought a P3 Turquoise "ink" that seems to resemble them. If you mean ink, then the Windsor & Newton drawing ink (with shellac) is what you want.

Cheers, B.

Old GW inks are still available under Coat d'Arms brand.

I personally use both GW washes (good consistency) and make my own (can control consistency). I use Vallejo, Coat d'Arms and P3 inks.

It's not really possible to create an ink unless you mix it from other inks. Washes are basically made my mixing regular acrylic paint together and then thinning them down, generally with an acrylic binder/medium or with water and some binder/medium. You need this binder/medium as plain water will just dilute the paint to the point where the pigment's don't hold together properly. The GW washes are sort of like this :)

What are you looking to use the inks for?

Oh and welcome to the forum :)

I've made my own 'ink'. I took a small piece of metal and simply held it in (not far above, but actually in) the flame of a candle. The soot is water soluable and I used it as a wash.

gw washes are awesome. gold in a bottle someone said. they save so much time and can create such awesome effects.

I don't know if this qualifies as official inks, but I've been mixing acrylic paint in Future Floor Finish and a bit of water to get custom inks. For washes I thin the paint and add some Golden Airbrush Medium (it was an accidental find, but works) as a binder. Cheap plastic containers from a craft store keeps them fresh for quite some time.

Ive used this recipe for a handful of colors and they have all worked really well. When i get my painting gear unpacked from a recent move I'm going to try some of the color recipes he has on the DakkaDakka thread linked on the tutorial video. : )

I would guess it would depend on your budget. I've spent about $100 on matt medium, flow aid, and a whole pile of different artist inks. The final results... well, i'm still experimenting and changing consistency, concentration of pigment etc. But as far as variability of colours go, its certainly the way go
