GD Baltimore 2009??

Congrats to all the winners.

I must admit the pictures of the minis do leave me feeling underwhelmed. However, having been to 2 GD myself, I know how much the pictures leave out and it is very difficult to truly appreciate the figures from just the pictures.

In any event, the most technically correct figure will get you past first cut more often then not, but to place involves more of a mood or feel the figure/s create.

Painting, especially for Golden Demons is more about the feel of the figure and whether it fits in the fluff AS WELL AS the conversion and painting skill displayed.

There really is more to it than smooth blends and creative head swaps....

It took me my first Golden Demon contest to figure that part out.

On top of that, if fits the style...but in terms of a painting competition, take away the emotional part, and focus on the actual painting.

Taking away the emotional part takes away what makes GD the competition it is..

purely going on technical painting would just be damn boring.. Different peoples techniques work to different effects and as greenstuff mentioned above should the overall feel of an artist such as remy tremblay lose out because it doesn\'t have perfectly smooth layers everywhere.For that matter should NMM and metallic minis be entered in their own category??? would red win out over white?? .

GD is a painting modelling and design competition.. The design part is to fit within GW\'s universe and imagery , the modelling and paint should combine well to achieve this... There is so much scope to have fun with it that I think people miss the boat some.. so many people get hung up on piss perfect blends, NMM or freehand on a standard mini that they get pissed when someone comes in wih a model with a head swap and pose change painted in a dark or unclean palletteand wins... overall feel counts for a lot more I think than perfect technique in GD ...thank God....

There is so much luck on the day that I never see any point of any bitching or moaning when it comes to results just chalk it down to bad luck on the day or at the very least learn from it.. respect the other entrants in particular the winners it\'s not a fight it\'s a painting comp... It must be upsetting to people who have been chosen as winners to have people crying that it didn\'t deserve it ...


I agree with Jess (brushmistress) on the whole standardisation and clarity thing though .. as long as the technical parameters are set people can work to it without having the goalposts shift.. At UK winners day this year Allan Merrett (one of the guys who started up the comp) was talking about a global standardisation coming in to just make everything clearer . Base size is always an issue but in his words . \"some of the first cut jusges get a bit gestapoish over the bse size...it\'s not so cut and dry just a general idea as long as the model isn\'t completely overtaken by the base it\'s fine. 40mm was used as the base size that denoted Monster as at the time only monsters were on 40mm but as characters get a bit bigger modelling gets a bit more advanced it\'s created an area people are\'t sure on\" Hence the clarification needed.. I\'ve seen guys having Gretchin put into monster category just because it was mounted on a 40. I\'d say as much as standardisation is needed common sense should take a role.

This unit was staggering to see in person. Simply amazing work.

There were a lot of unbelieveable minis this year. I\'m SO glad I went. Even if just to see everyone pull out all the stops. And... I know I mentioned it already but the \'Eavy Metal guys brought stuff that is hard to believe humans painted them!

Got my first demon but I learned just how much there is to learn out there.

Well said Dave and others, sometimes you just didn\'t choose the correct mini that the judge will like or you didn\'t see that one chip. The guy at my store pointed one out when I got home. I got an honorable mention but didn\'t place this time ... so here is my plan, I am going to try harder for next time...

Silphid hits the nail on the head, it\'s all personal preference of the judges and what they like that day. It\'s like when I walk into the art institute here in Chicago, some art speaks to me and some doesn\'t, whereas the stuff I don\'t like somebody might think it\'s the best thing since sliced bread. Anyways, in the end you just get a shiny sword or some goofy looking resin trophies. :beer: In no way would a GD dictate how good of a painter you are or how proud you should be of your work.

Also, Matt Cexwish pointed out in another thread that someone bought Ana\'s Dark Angels and then entered them in as their own. Now that\'s a ton of crap to bitch about! Sorry Ana!

Hey Everyone,

I am noticing a lot of people dissatisfied with the GD results and I can relate. I was very up in arms last year about the results. Over the past year I\'ve done a lot of thinking and soul searching and realize that there are some things in life not worth getting upset over.

Sure I was dissappointed with the results from this year too but insted of getting upset about it I just said, \"Oh well . . . try harder for next year\". And that\'s exactly what I\'m going to do.

Use the energy you have to take a look at the winning models. What can you learn from the other painters? What did they have that you didn\'t?

Remember to keep your integrity though. Don\'t paint to what you think the judges want to see. Paint in your style, with your colors. Eventually someone will notice and you will win.

Keep learning. Always be willing to learn. Have others look at your minis. If you\'ve been working on the same project for weeks on end put it down for at least a week and then come back to it with fresh eyes.

Be critical. Our minis are like our babies. We give them life by adding color and giving expression. That can make it tough to be critical of your own work. You can always improve.

venting on here or any other message board will only bring you grief. Instead, turn to a trusted friend and ally and let them know how you feel and why. Then get right back to creating that perfect mini.

You\'re day will come. Just keep plugging along.

I don\'t know how often it happens to other painters, but it happened to Ana for the second time now.

At least this guy had the guts to enter them in her name.... And the judges missed the fact that Anna is a female name? Or did he ask a girl to enter them for him? Or maybe it\'s not obviously a girly name in the US? ???
