GD Duel

Im seriously considering the strat of my GD project as Laura pointed out that there is only 4 month left (where does all the time go?) but I have a few questions.

The base, plinth, stand, whatever you call it, does it have to be a certain size or under? E.g. is there a max size for the base? Im pretty sure dioramas have to be under a certain size, does this apply to duel?

Do the figures have to be able to be taken off the scene? E.g. each miniature is seperate on its own gaming base and can be taken off the scene?

Also what merits the difference between duel and diorama, is there a number of constraints where something would be classed as a diorama more than a fight?

Sorry if this sounds a bit thick, but I don\'t want to pour hours of time into convo\'s and painting only for it to be disqualified.

Well for starters look at the description of the categories on the GW web site.

Duel-
This category comprises of two single models mounted on a single 40mm or 50mm Slottabase. The judges will be looking for a dynamic pairing of two well-matched opponents in some kind of combat or other dramatic situation. Models may be from the Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 or The Lord of The Rings ranges.

Diorama or Battlescene
Entries for this category consist of a diorama based on the worlds of Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 or The Lord of The Rings. The display must not be larger than 30 x 30cm and the maximum permitted height is 30cm. The diorama should be appropriate to the background of Warhammer, Warhammer 40,000 or The Lord of The Rings, but otherwise there are no restrictions on the battle scene\'s theme or content.

So yes to answer your questions
duel has a max size so does Diorama. I think people have used the 60mm round for duels but I cant be sure..look for previous winners and see what they have done.

As for the figures being removeable or attached.. for gods sake attach them, otherwise it looks like *hit! If your worried about ohh Ill never be able to game with these miniatures well then dont do the category. Removeable figures in these two categories always looks bad.

The Diorama doesnt need to be a battle, it ust needs to tell a story. A diorama doesnt need to be 20 figures either a story could be told with as few as 3. Also just because they give you 30x30 does NOT mean you have to use it all. In fact dont. That always tends to look bad also becuase you useually end up with a ton of open space that looks poor.

Well there is no way it will go on a little slotta base, so it looks like it will be a diorama. And I don\'t think i will need 30x30 amount of space.

I won\'t be gaming so il just attach them, i was just unsure of this, as I have read somehwere that firgures needed to be taken off the scenic base and viewed seperately.

Cheers for the answers Jeff!

Matty that is for the single figure classes and the regiment classes where the figure(s) have been put on larger bases.

Matty.. My suggestion is draw out a 30 x 30cm square on a piece of paper and place your figures and make mock ups of the terrain featrures and put it on the piece and see if you really need the size..then start pushing things closer together to see how the scean feels. Take things away.. put more on..see if it changes the appearance, see if you need all that stuff to tell the story you want to tell. 30x30 cm is a big chunk of space and almost every time I see someone try to do one that big..if fails miserably. some of the best dioramas do it in 6-8 in square area.

Also keep in mind it doesn\'t need to be square.. it could be a round base or a oval or even an odd shape..just as long as it fits inside the 30x30 square you have drawn your ok.

A good idea is to get people to recreate the poses you might use and draw/take photos from different angles - that way you can convert or sculpt more accurately
