First of all, I would remove the heart freehand at the back of the cloack. I don\'t know but it just doesn\'t fit. The painting is really nice and I must admit that even with all the macro and the lens effects on, I still can\'t see many flaws, I\'m not so sure on the blue shade under his eye though. The face is really nice and I like the tatoo.

As for the varnish remover, well you don\'t actually have to remove it, just use another varnish over the old one. What kind of varnish did you use?

i agree with hoc. remove the hearts, they looks too random and the blue under the eyes

i would say the sword needs some more shading too

also some dark lining on the edges of the thing dangling from his belt (some sort of scroll holder?), the medals etc

some of the gems seem unfinished

Yep Got to agree; loose the Hearts they don\'t work in terms of the miniatures context.
Also there are no gems stones on the mini except for the two on the cloak hooks, what you have painted blue on the sword hilt is the Tang/Crosspiece locking rivet.

If the blue is intended as representing oxidization then it\'s a bit heavy.
You need to consider that anyone wearing or depending on armour and a sword will not be allowing rust or heavy tarnish to make the armour less than dependable.

I\'d suggest that you re-work the areas suggested and then wash with some well diluted Baadab Black over the armour.

The cloak will look ok if you work out the heart and then apply some very careful washes over the whole cloak which will help the glossy varnish to dull.

After that a shot or two of Dullcoate will smooth things out for you.

looking good nick. your deff getting better. the worst part for me is the back cloak because the red is too blocky and doesnt have enough contrast. it seems that its the same brightness on the top as it is on the bottom. try to give more contrast there. as well as the blue under the eyes needs to be blended in i think. :)

thanks a bunch guy will try to get something done on him tomorrow!

@DR, i haven\'t the foggiest where to get dullcoat, so i may just have to work on most areas with a few licks of paint to dull it, i don\'t know what else to do!

get some daler rowney matte varnish. it\'s a brush on and you need turps to clean your brush but it is reasonably priced and shit hot. make sure you shake hard though before applying (i added some agitators to mine)

I think the thing that will hurt you in GD is that the model looks as if it\'s been dipped, or heavy uses of GW washes have been used. Try dullcoat varnish as others have said and hopefully it won\'t look as dipped.

Also, I believe you can get Tamyia in the UK. They have a matte sealer that makes Dull Cote look like high gloss. I have a friend that uses it and it is not only flat but tough. We gamed with his minis and they never scuffed.

Good luck with your entry!

I\'ll echo what the others have said and add that his shirt\'s sleeves could use a bit more lighting on the top parts and maybe put a bit less contrast in the beard (it looks peroxided too me, but maybe that\'s what you were going after ;)).

Also, although the base works well as it is, here are a few extra ideas :

*) dirty the rocks where they meet with the earth;
*) paint a bit of moss on the rocks;
*) paint the character\'s shadow (it doesn\'t have to be a hard shadow, a diffused one can work well and add a bit of detail).

Nick, you can get cans of dullcote from Antenociti. Just make sure you get a couple of cans or so, as you need to pay £5 for the special bags needed for postage. It\'s lovely stuff - never let me down :)
