GD LA

Oh Neat!! the much admired EricJ knows of me! ...oh and Molebrain too! :D

I decided to try out GDLA this year, eventually I\'d like to have a trophy from everywhere around the world, but I\'ll start with North America! Real life having a strong hold on me these last few months, I did not get the time to make as big a project as I\'d hoped. Contrary to you EricJ, if I could stop making armies and get back to fancy GD models... Yes, I am a gamer, Magmatrax and Hellblade see combat regularily around here, I enjoy the game as much as I paint.

Lacking time, no fancy NMM from me this time, and no Khorne either... Perhaps the other Chaos gods wispered in my ear... I did work an insane amount of time on converting a squad though... I hope to have enought time to do a decent paintjob to do them justice.

I am also taking this opportunity to have my Fiancée enter her first GD, I \'\'conned\'\' her into the hobby about 8 months ago and she\'s grew a liking and a good deal of skill since. I don\'t know if she\'ll place but she\'s simply hoping for first cut and participation, that\'s the right attitude.

Real life draining hobby time, again, means I won\'t have much if anything for GD Toronto, but I\'ll definetly attend to meet people and catch a game with someone (but I\'m not playing against unpainted armies! :p) Baltimore is unlikely. You can blame the new Tau release for it and probably not making it to Chicago in July either...

EricJ as soon as you get your army done I\'ll fly over to wherever you live and we\'ll have that game! lol And if you want a friendly challenge, I\'ll let you know when my biggest project, slumbering half done for over a year now, will be seeing the light...

Later!

hah, you\'re the one with swords and trophies and such, I just pretend so far, Oh and posting a lot helps, haha ;)

I\'m looking forward to meeting you in LA though, you\'ll have to join us for our above mentioned plan. I sort of have a similar dream to some day get trophies from all over, but for now, I\'ll just try to get 1 from LA, lol. We\'ll see though, one day we\'ll have to get together the North America\'s team to take on those Euro comps. See if we can manage a little respect over there.

You sound like you\'re about in the same boat as me though. I\'ve been working 75ish hours a week lately so the entries have been slowly coming along, and I only seem to find time to pain anymore when I\'m real tired, which I figured can\'t help the result...

I have a few bigger secret GD projects in the works as well, in various stages on in-completion, but hopefully will get done and get this witchhunters army a bit more fleshed out! The problem with the army is I keep wanting repaint as my skills improve I look back and get kind of disappointed. Some day, but not someday soon lol

I\'m getting more excited about this GD though, looks to be good company, and seems to be shaping up to have a bunch of quality painters there as well!

Looks like LA is going to be better than ever this year. I\'m only going to be attending Chicago myself. I definitely like the idea of getting together a NA team to go try our luck against the Europeans. Though... It will be quite some time before I would ever consider being a part of such a team myself.

Well you\'re entering what now, 4 entries? Then I predict 4 trophies  I do have great trust in your abilities indeed . And I must say I am impressed to realize you seem very easy-going, not stuck up with his talent and quite a modest individual, kudos! I look forward to our encounter.

But if I can be so blunt as to offer a word of advice (this being your first GD); enter with hope, and not expectation (which you show no sign of that\'s good). There is always controversy with the judging, I think the judges do a very good job but it is also a matter of personnal taste. Keep in mind that the Golden demons are after all an advertising tool for GW, and though I have no hard evidence, I believe that a fair amount of decisions are political marketing related. That being said, I\'ll be teh first to slap the judges if you don\'T get a trophy :mad:lol

So my goals at a GD: socialize, learn and teach with the people there, and hope to present a model people will remember weeks after the competition.

I can\'t guarantee attendance at the gathering, but I\'ll try. When exactly (night before, after?) and where?

P.S. : What categories in particular do you plan on entering, EricJ?

Right now: All the singles (40k, fantasy, LOTR) and 40k Squad. I don\'t have much hopes for the squad, since they\'re old, but I wanted to give them a shot. My 5th entry which is almost ruled out, would be Fantasy large. Although that may see light in a later event, but I\'m just getting too involved in the sculpting to get it done on time to satisfaction for LA.

I agree with you, GD\'s are essentually one of the trickest marketing devices around. We\'re basically paying them for the mini, paying them for the contest, all for a little chunk of ressin, while then they use it all to sell their minis and fill their magazines! I actually think it\'s quite ingenious what they\'ve managed to pull off. And of course I completely buy into it, because ultimately they\'re providing a ton of fun for us as well.

Wise words also, I try not to have much in the way of expectations, and pretty much try to downplay it best I can, and honestly am going to learn the ropes this time and maybe hopefully walk away with something. Although down the road I have plans (like storming Euro GD\'s! *evil*).

And I have my moments of being an egotistical asshole, don\'t worry! just ask around here. Mostly I seem to be able to keep it in check, look to help others best I can, and just generally keep this whole hobby thing fun!!

Oh, as for the getting together. Honestly no more plans than what you can read in this thread so far, hopefully we\'ll figure something out more in the next couple weeks.

I can\'t speak to what it\'ll be like for you, Eric...but for me the contest was an emotional rollercoaster---and I\'m a fairly ambivalent fellow.

Most other folks that I spoke to go through the same thing I went through---

You lay your model down on the table---and immediately you admire your own work for a sec....then you start lookin at the other stuff sitting beside yours.

You start remembering all the warts that you have on your minis---and you start seeing all the awsome work the other painters have done. Before you know it, you\'ve absolutely discredited all the work you\'ve put into the miniature.f----all objectivity has gone right out the window---and you\'ve talked yourself into believing that it was a complete waste of time for you to even make the trip....

Then first cut....
Then comes the judging....

It was an awsome experience. I can\'t wait until next time.

Ha! I\'m pretty laid back too- but that\'s exactly what happens. Great description.

yeah, I can imagine exactly that happening honestly.

I have this thing, when I am away from a miniature I\'m working on or just finished for any amount of time, my brain will just start picking at the smallest errors, and they get bigger and bigger in my minds eye, until I basically decide the thing is a piece of junk. Then finally I\'ll get home and look at the model again and remember the thing I might have magnified isn\'t all that bad and often correctable. I imagine that the GD process will magnify this many times over!

Also the fact when I look at my minis I only see the mistakes while looking at others for the first time, I only see the best parts.

We\'ll see, it\'s why I want to hit the burger place and socialize as much as possible, so I can take my mind off it all!

And the more I think about it, the more I\'ll be happy to be making cuts and such, trophies will just be a bonus if it happens. :)

:Excuse me for going all fanboy, but:

So far we have 4 out of 5 (Brice Cocanour, Vincent Hudon, Adam Roe, and EricJ) of my favourite painters going to GD LA, and \"Dirty\" Steve Fuller is on the CMON forums. Holy crap this is awesome! This GD is going to be something else :)

Unfortunately, my best chance at being at a Games Day will be in Chicago (instead of LA), in late July. But wait, you guys are normal!!?!??! :eek:I thought that you had genetic implants like space marines to paint better and answer thousands of letters a month..

WOW! Looks like GD LA this year is gonna be great. Almost tempts me to go there this year, but I think it\'s too late to start on even a project now :p

Dirty, I\'ll make sure to go to GD sometime in close future. Meanwhile, say hi to Cassie (I hope I wrote her name right :)) I miss both of you ...

Eric, I\'m sure you\'ll do fine. I second the comment about coming with hope but not expectation - it will hurt less and you\'ll enjoy it more that way :)

Cheers,
Lili
