The warhammer gold winner is sexy little piece of eye candy. The style is very refreshing after all of the grit and dirt covering minis lately. The clean lining and colors just pop out and the designs on the beast\'s skin are just sweet.

Well I have just checked out all of the official pics and......... damn they must be really really bad photos.

All of the colour transitions, details etc look very poor. The shaggoth is impressive but everything else left me unimpressed.

But unless you see these things in real life you can never properly judge a mini.

I love Steve. Very friendly, great guy, extremely nice - and his wife was a hoot! (Dirty - she showed me your Giant\'s \"Pirate Booty!\" Fun-NAY!) So I hope he doesn\'t take these \"Bad photos\" posts too harshly. After all, we can all understand and appreciate what sorts of time constraints and pressure he is working under!

But I WAS there, and I have to say that, yup, many of those figs were quite a bit smoother than the photos may make them appear. I noticed especially on the Green Grey Knight... Which in person was a \"Mintier\" color it seemed, and the metallic transitions were much smoother than they seem in the photos.

That\'s whay after all the hoopla about Atlanta, I kept trying to tell folks... \"Don\'t be judgmental. You weren\'t THERE.\" Seeing a piece in real life and seeing an online photo of it are two totally different balls of wax. Cans of worms. Boxes of Crayons. Whatever.

to be frank, i cant imagine that any of the photos i take are any worse than those, and i havent had my metallics come out like that. the details look \"meh\" to me too. still, they\'re much better than anything i could do (maybe...), and i couldnt win anything.

perhaps im whishful, but id expect the winners to be (or at least look) above and beyond.

if it is the photography (and it probably is), id say that gw f**ked up BIG TIME.

edit: its strange how some of the shots look ok, and others are really bad.

These are just about my thoughts exactly at this point, well said. Steve is AWESOME, but with the set up and time constraints I don\'t if anyone could do better. And to his credit he did get some darn good shots of some of the entries

Hi all,

I\'ve been lurking here on CMON for almost the past year for tips and tricks on how to improve my painting. I just started painting again last year after a 15 year hiatus from the hobby and I have to say that CMON is THE resource for people like myself who have the desire to learn and improve.

I attended this Games Day LA this past weekend and was EXTREMELY fortunate to win the 40k Large/Vehicle and FW plaque with my Grey Knight Dreadnought. I am mostly a table top gamer and having CMON as a reference has been an enormous aid. Though I\'ve been reluctant to submit much because at times it becomes a snipefest that isn\'t always constructive.

That being said and having seen many of the entries first hand, I agree with most of you that the photos did not do the minis justice. I thought that 40k squad was a hotly contested category and any of three squads could have won a gold. But, you definately had to see Tim\'s and Vincent\'s entries up close to appreciate the detail.

Also want to give props to Silphid, Commander Y, Tagron, Yellow One, Nano, and and my bud designer891 (this list could go on and on). These guys have really influenced my painting and helped me pick up my game.

EricJ: You da man. I\'ve been observing your stuff since Day One. I regret not being able to say hello at GDLA. Your entries were phenomenal, especially the Witchunter Inquisitor. One of these days you\'ll have one of those \"shiny sticks\" that GW hands out to hang on your wall;)

I did meet lotsa folks, but I certainly won\'t know you by screen name. I will almost certainly remember - unless it was at Karaoke on Friday night before the show that I met you... then I definitely won\'t remember a darn thing! Mmmm... Guinness on tap...

Hi Patrick, I saw your dread and really did like it, I had a critique or two, but ultimately you deserved your awards, you were easily the best in your category, well done! I appreciate the kind words as well, and would have liked to meet you there, next time we definately will have to.

Stick around on the boards too, a lot of great feedback to be had, and I wouldn\'t worry too much about snipers, people complain, but honestly, the point of cmon isn\'t having good scores, but pushing yourself to improve your scores. That has been a big influence and driven me to improve over the last couple years.

Take care, and again, congradulations on the gold!

I think for every message in this thread, and the countless similar ones about Atlanta and LA (at which I\'ve won numerous awards so I take some offense), I should reply with the same statement over and over (that\'ll get me to \"posting freak\" in no time). That statement is:

Blame the judges if you think the winners aren\'t worth. They have a lot to do with it.
Blame the painting community for not all converging on the event and demanding better.
And mostly blame yourselves for not bothering to show up and prove you can do better.

If you weren\'t there on that given day and didn\'t contribute to the success or failings of that event, then you\'ve got very little value to add to the discussion if you have nothing other than complaints. And complaints should be directed at GW, it\'s there show. Don\'t blame the participants and winners. They don\'t control the final outcome.

Cheers,
-Freeman

Did anyone catch my entry? I did the gandalf the grey in the youngbloods category. I made finals but I didn\'t place. Does anyone have any critiques?

You probabley do remember... but I\'m kind of embarrissed about how I met you. Lets just say I met you in the store...

Fine I\'ll say but don\'t laugh I was having one of those things... You know what I meen.

I was that babbling kid who couldn\'t quite push the word basket out of my mouth. Then I left and I said, \"I loved your librarian from last year\" but I didn\'t think you heard. It was really embarrising.

@ Pat5150 I loved your entry, great to have you here on the cool mini team

@gt4948c I like you comments. Being there always helps.

@Pastor Prime I agree with your milli vanilli coment, and I think that your mini was great, I don\'t mide getting beat by better minis.

I was going to leave a compliment for DIRTY, because I think that the photos were great. My inquisitor was very hard to photograph it took me about 30 pics and 3 different trys to get the picture the way I wanted it to post here. And Dirtys took one pic and it really looks great.

Hello all ...

I wish I had seen this thread before LA, I also would have loved to meet up with you guys to talk about painting.

I won Gold in the Open Catgory with my Knights Astartes Vet Sarge vs. Tyranid Warrior Diorama ...

if your interrested you can check out the blog here ... http://www.indexastartesforums.com/LDU801/forums.php?m=posts&q=342&d=0

This was my first GD to attend in person and I was really amazed at what I saw mini wise. There were so many truly beautiful pieces ... Honestly I don\'t know how the judges can pick winners out of that huge pool of talent.

Congratulations to all the other Demon winners there ...

Adam, that Terminator Chaplain was gorgeous and I must say I loved the Tau Tetra too, beautiful.

Tom and Vincent, your squads were excellent, I only wish I could have seen them up closer and with better lighting ...

Eric your Wood Elf was very nice but I don\'t remember seeing your Gollum when I was there :(

Patrick, I really liked your GK Dread too, excellent work ...

I\'m sure I\'m leaving someone out, but really there were so many great pieces there ... It gave me a good idea of where the next level for me needs to be at in a way I\'ve never experienced before ...

(edit) - Congrats Quentin your marine is great ! and Brice I just love your Inquisitor, the feeling of action is wonderful ... It looks just like GW\'s imagery ...

Hey Dirty Steve - I for one really like the pics you took, especially of my diorama ... they look sweet :) by the way ... I\'m the one that told my wife that she should enter the costume contest as a Hobbit ...

anyway, It was a great experience, although it was definitely a long, nail-biting, emotional rollercoaster of a day ... I only wish I could have spoken with some of you guys in person.
