Generally all Single Figure entries need to be on Standard GW Gaming bases as supplied. (Terminators can go on their 40mm bases)
If they are in display bases then they need to be clearly removable, on the gaming base, from the display.

If it\'s one of Dragon Forge Designs bases there\'s a high chance it\'ll be disqualified. (or it would be in the UK)

Had a discussion with Alan Merrett about this and he had the following to say... Please note that this is UK ......

\"Sometimes our guys get carried away and a bit gistapoish . Base size isn\'t the biggest probem as long as the base is of a reasonable size for the mini so a normal marine on a 40mm isn\'t a problem. .. If it\'s tight though and there is a decision to be made to cut 4 models to get the winning three then an actual gaming base would be favoured..\"

In short I think that clearly says somewhere in there that use the right base size it\'s got more chance..

If your model is on one of Jeff\'s plinths then that should be fine. (GW don\'t make th so no elitism there)(surprised they haven\'t latche onto it and produced a range of resin bases with silly prices that are the ONLY ones allowed at GD comps ....shudder....). If it\'s one of his scenic bases then that will probablybe a no no.. Again I\'m talking UK.. but the general consensus in GD is to have the gaming base shown.

I think the problem is that the mini must be on a gaming base for 40k single. And a display base/plinth is fine, as long as the mini(and it\'s base) can be removed from the plinth for judging. That\'s my understanding. If the mini is attached directly to the plinth instead of an appropriate gaming base, it could be bumped to open, or disqualified. I\'d talk to them at the table to be sure though.

yes if one on my display plinths its ok to use..its just a plinth.

I believe using one of my cast scenic bases on the other hand is not allowed in Golden Demons.

I just wanna make a statement that was told to me by GW officials (specifically John Shaffer) - A 40K Single model must be on an appropriately sized base - however, only Terminators may be based on 40mm (doesn\'t matter if the model was supplied with a 40mm). Otherwise, it\'s considered a Large 40K Model. Models may also be based on a plinth, but must be removable. I was told this was going to be the standard in both US & UK...if it\'s not going to be the standard, I\'m pissed as hell (not that I wasn\'t already :p).

Jess, I think what got your model bumped from single figure to Large model was not the base size, it was the fact that it was a mounted model. Bike mounted Models go to the Vehicle category it only makes sense that a horse mounted model goes to large figure.

I know they allowed in single in Fantasy, that one doesn\'t make sense to me either. They should be large model also in my opinion.

It\'s funny, because it wasn\'t clarified to me that way, but if it had then I would be ok with it (and yes - either mounted fantasy needs to be moved, or mounted 40k should count as single).

hmmm...I\'m gonna have to disagree - I think that mounted wh and mounted 40k single minis are actually quite different, given the relative sizes and given the often mechanical nature of the 40k mounts (bikes, jetbikes, walkers etc.)

Haahahaha thats funny jess, your going to be pissed, becuase my drazard (which is not terminator size) was on a 40mm base sized plinth and it is not detachable! but it only made the cut so it dident really matter. tim lison is a really cool guy so if you ask him befor other judges are there and get him to say ok, they wont move it. (i think hes the head judge.)

Jess is correct. I was standing there when she was talking to John. John was the one who had to move her entry because he said he needed to follow the rules as they are written.

Hello, I feel I should step in and clarify a bit. Jess, your figure was not moved because it was on a 40mm base, it was moved because it is sold packaged with a 40mm base, and is not a Terminator. If you managed to cram that cavalry figure onto a 25mm base, it still would have been moved. I am sorry I did not clarify that in our discussion.

Here are a few other questions that often crop up:

\"Appropriately sized bases\" means a base that looks proportionate in relation to the figure - for most single figures this is a 40mm base size MAXIMUM. When determining what category your figure will go into, it is largely decided by the size of base the model comes with. For example, models in the 40K single category should all naturally come with a 25mm base (with the exception of Terminators). You may mount your model on a larger base, but if it gets larger than 40mm for a single figure, it may be moved. If for aesthetic purposes you want to mount a figure on a square base instead of round, or vice versa, that is just fine.

That being said, if you must absolutely have a massive display base for your single figure, you may do so, but you must have the figure on a smaller base (no larger than 40mm) that rests inside the display base, as you often see in the unit categories. Entries that are obviously abusing this rule may be moved to the Open or Diorama categories.

When it comes to additional figures on bases (like familiars, cherubs, squires etc.) The basic rule is this: You must have a dominant focal point figure that will be the focus for judging. You may have additional figures on the base, but their overall size should not be larger than 50% of the focal point figure\'s size. In the case of Adam Roe\'s figure that took 3rd in LA last year (which definitely pushed it BTW), we deemed the additional figure was small enough so as not to interfere with the hierarchy. We did not consider the banner into the overall comparison.

I hope that helps. I know the rules are a bit confusing and at times the category distinctions are a bit vague. We may look into changing some categories in the future (specifically the 40K and WH single), but we\'ve been striving to match what the UK does for the sake of consistency and clarity. For Toronto and Chicago we will keep the rules the same as Baltimore. If you have questions or concerns about your entry, please send me a PM, or post your questions on this thread.

Many thanks,

John Shaffer
