GD UK 2010 Aftermath

You cant place the miniatures in the cabinets yourself and the reasons why are absolutely right (whats to stop someone knobbling the competition or swiping a particularly nice mini). I wouldnt appreciate anyone fumbling around with a mini right near something I have spent untold hours painting only to have it broken or stolen due to the lack of care or the smarts to know that stealing is not acceptable.

@ DFB - Please do not lent mine or anyone elses ranting put you off going. Im sure lots of people had a really good day and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of the models on display. For me this years GD failed to match the standards of the other GDs I've attended so my own feelings are based on the disappointment I felt. Hopefully next year things will change back to the way they have been in previous years and after throwing my toys out of the pram and realising that theres bigger things to concern myself with (Painting up the Wreckerfex I bought from Forgeworld) I'm once again looking forward to getting stuck in and competing. I still crave that elusive demon statue and will not be satisfied until I have one (I may be waiting a while lol).

Sorry for souring the mood :forgive-me:

Just months of following peoples WIPs & the overall excitedness & general looking-forwardness to it all I'm really disappointed that so many folks seem to have come away from it unhappy. There's always the good natured, oh drat I didn't win, kind of thing or comments about some people being smelly but this years reports seem to be about fundamental organisational issues that really shouldn't be an issue for a company of GWs size. I was really looking forward to getting to vicariously enjoy the event through you guys :) I even began this thread 24 hours early in my enthusiasm (stupidity?).

Oh well, far more interesting things to distract me occuring all the time. The lass I work opposite just showed me the Zombie Schoolgirl costume she'll be wearing for Halloween! ;)

Cheers, B.

Far too cheeky for work Col! Certainly put a smile on my face :) Followed by a 15 minute conversation about pantry sourced Zombie make-up tips.

Plus the boss has just popped in to ask what tipple I'd like for my Christmas goody bag :beerwave: This company is a joy sometimes to balance the frustrations!

Cheers, B.

Oh, incidentally, queueing at Forgeworld was worth it just for the free Death Korps of Krieg poster that is now tacked up above my painting table. :)

Yeah, highlight for me was forgeworld and warhammer forge. Waiting until 3pm for the queue to go down a bit I still managed to pick up the show only runtbot and a free poster and the seminar was interesting, lots of cool new stuff coming up.

God knows i tried 3 times to pick up my reservation at forgeworld but gave up in the end, just dont have the patience to deal with the pushing and shoving.

I think I've only made it to the front of the queue once in five years.

It does sound awful having entries carelessly handled - can you not insist on putting it in the cabinet youself, a staff member could tell you where to put it and then it becomes the responsibility of the owner to look after it.
The organisation of Golden Deamon is supposed to elliminate the opportunity for bias. Yeah Right (*1)
Poor mentality really - GW is training its staff in totally the wrong way and just alienating people.
Agreed. GW is training its retail staff in an American fast Food marketing methodology which is deliberatly forcing older (30+) staff out of the door, Managers now have to mark their staff on a 10 point system on how they greet people entring the store and every demo game is supposed to be completed with a complete gaming system sale.

...There's always the good natured, oh drat I didn't win, kind of thing or comments about some people being smelly (Nowhere near as bad this year *2) but this years reports seem to be about fundamental organisational issues that really shouldn't be an issue for a company of GWs size. Considering that GW are telling their managers to promote GDUK as the biggest gaming convention in the world (You what?) you would expect some kind of organisational ability, but this years was a big visit by the F*ck Up Fairy. Placing Forgeworld into a hall where there were gaming table immediatley opposite the "queueing area" (I use the term advisedly) was a class piece of stupidity. Either their events management team are morons or they are so new at their job that they don't realise that people go to the foreworld stand to avoiud the extortionate postage prices.

Oh, incidentally, queueing at Forgeworld was worth it just for the free Death Korps of Krieg poster that is now tacked up above my painting table. :) Please tell me you are being sarcastic/ironic.
(*1 If eliminating bias were true then visiting persons from overseas showing their competition entries to the studio staff PRIOR to Gamesday would automatically disqualify them.)
(*2 A couple of years ago in the NEC my mate Paul was being pushed out of the way (not a good idea!) while trying to look at the GD cabinets by a particularly large and smelly person. Pauls response (sans violence this time) was "Oi mate if you want me to move just raise your arm and let the f*cking stink out of your pits!" ----Subtle as a brick, typical Bootie!)

This is the Forgeworld "queue at 10:08, Hence the turnaround and walkaway methodology applied by Paul, Martyn, Tim (Twosoc) and I.

My experience of the whole thing seemed to be vastly different, but then again im quite oblivious to most things really....the Judging thing has been vary subjective to me since Ijee and I started goin 4 years ago and he has won 4 trophies over the past 3 years, Ive not won a finalist pin in 2 years. But ive not been put off by this because i know my abilities are not on the same level as the Parkes, Latham, McVeys of the world so I try, try again.....

The FW stand has always been, shall we say, a pain but what suprises me is that Black Library can put far more effort in to there area and fw still insist on the yearly scrum for sales.....so i think the people you need to speak to are forgeworld themselves.....

Dear god...Those pictures speak for themselves! The organizers need lining up against a wall and shot with a ball of their own shit! Last I was at a GD I was fortunate enough to be in early and casually saunter up to the FW stall, get a few odds and sods for myself and others and do a fast turnaround. I even think I went back later with no troubles... I also managed to get a finalist pin for something I picked up off the table on the way out the door just so I could get in early entering Golden Demon, oddly. Really does look like things have headed much deeper south than a few years ago!

The whole thing was an utter shambles and it seems GW has forgotten about the hobby and just wanted to make lats of money.

I was in the forgeworld seminar and someone asked about the showcase models and if they would be doing any more..... the forgeworld guy "Tony" response shocked me, his words "no we don't make as much money on those so we wont be doing anymore"

That wasn't what I heard, his reply was that they might do the odd one, but unlikely to do very many because of cost versus return, so not an absolute no...

No matter if an absolute no or not, if you can do more money with other things, you will do it. Especially as a company! And you would be crazy not to.
