GD09 advice needed

Following on from mr. Cybersquig\'s thread, I have started to plan my entries for next year (even though I probably wouldn\'t start painting until about March)
One entry will be in the 40k squad category, where I\'m hoping to use a lot of movement within the piece... The problem is though, when does it stop being an entry of a squad, and when does it become a diorama?
The miniatures and base will both contribute about 50% each towards the \"movement\".... (and if my grammar was slightly better, this thread wouldn\'t sound half as dodgy
:D)

Simple consideration as long as the base is within the size limits and the figures are removable then the Squad category should be fine.
HOWEVER remember that the judges will At Their Discression move the entry if they feel it is more suitable in another category.

Yeah, basically, as Mike said... so long as each individual figure is mounted on a suitable gaming base which can be removed from the scenic base so it could be played with then you\'re fine.

Given that they\'re known for taking them off the base for some of the judging, then you might like to think about how they\'d look separately from their base. If they still look cohesive and you still get across the feeling you were going for then surely it\'d be fine.

it\'s the entire piece that gets photographed so don\'t worry about what they look like removed.
just make sure they are on their gaming bases and can be removed.

a realy sweet paintjob isn\'t enough, make sure their are conversions (and the putty work needs to be damn good) in their as well as making the display plinth an absoloute cracker that adds to the overall look (if it dominates the squad you won\'t get any where)

their are huge grey areas in the rules, that\'s where demons are won and lost in the UK.

Wow, good thing then that I\'m useless when it comes to sculpting ( as illustrated by my dreadnought in the wip section )
But then again, there is a big diffirence between conversion work and complete re-sculpts.
Next year will be my first attemt at GD, so I\'ll be happy enough if they at least let my entries into the building:p

Advice for Games Day: Save your money and enter a competition where other manufacturers are allowed. After you pump thousands of $$ into their coffers and have an awesome GD entry ready to go, they will cancel the GD nearest you, raise the price of everything and quit selling the bits you need to finish your fantastic GD entry.

Anyone detect a note of bitterness there? lol

I seriously doubt however that the GD UK will be cancelled(*), due to the large amount of publicity it generates in commercial investment terms.
Plus as there is only one GD in the UK the cost analysis of \"make or break point\" on venue hire is somewhat better that than in the USA which has/had to balance 4 GD\'s.


(* Unless of course GW goes \"Toes Up\" which in reality would be seriously bad for all hobbyists.)

This was mostly sarcastic; but they made my kids cry dude. They were all geared up for another GD only to be let down. How\'s that for appealing to the core demographic. At this point I don\'t care if they go T.U. whether or not it\'s good for the hobby.
And you\'re right about them not cancelling GD UK, when the country is the size of Oregon, anybody can attend. The US is slightly larger and needs more events. Either way My kids are now painting everything but GW! Copplestone gangsters and the Killer B pulp figs are their current faves.

The majority of miniatures that I paint are non-GW, the reason for me wanting to enter GD is that you always hear about people really enjoying themselves at the event. I feel a bit isolated here down south, being that the only person I get to talk to about the hobby is the missus, who normally takes part in the conversation via a blank stare.
It will be great to meet people who actually care about the hobby

it\'s hel;d in folkstone and is over two days so your mrs could go down and have bit of a holiday whilst your checking out models and chatting to people.

check out the basement forum as they always have a group of people there.

Plan on coming down to Orlando for Mega (late February)
We\'re working up a painting contest. Paint-n-take and the large vinyl guys are gettting together to work out a better contest.

May not be great this coming year, but it beats nothing.

Of course, you\'ve got DragonCon too....

Sounds Good. I missed Dragon Con this year. But my boys and I always go to the ATL toy soldier show; which has stiff competition. I managed to pull a bronze there this year. They also give more than 3 awards per category. Everything that merits Gold gets a gold etc.
