Gears of War Space Marines?

Hi everyone,

I\'ve ordered the Assault on Black Reach box just for the Space Marines. My first idea was to paint them as standard Ultramarines, but after I\'m playing Gears of War for a few days, I\'m thinking of starting my own chapter:

The Gears of Ultramar

Basicly, it\'s the colours of the GoW dudes (check http://www.xboxfocus.com/uploads/image/gears%20guys.jpg ) but with Ultramarines heraldry on the shoulderpads, banners etc. I chose the Ultramarines so I have access to most of the Space Marine miniatures.

Would this work? I think it would look awesome, but I want your oppinion.

Any tips are always welcome!

Using this as a basis doesn\'t look too bad, but to me they look more like Imperial Guard.

While in itself the idea isn\'t without merit, It might make them look rather too much like Traitor Marines rather than The Bright and Shining military examples they are supposed to be.

One thing though I do find that the \"Armour\" looks somewhat impractical for normal ground pounders. I can\'t see many \"grunts\" wanting to have to wear huge amounts of additional weight without some form of Power assistance.

The iconography (Skull and gear) Makes ME think of the Adeptus Mechanicus personally - maybe they would make a good AM army (I can\'t remember the name of the AM\'s military wing)

Thanks for all your replies! They could be Imperial Guard but I want a Space Marine army because I don\'t want to paint lots and lots of mini\'s;) And the way they act in the game (though badass warriors:D) make me think more a Space Marines then the (cowardly:]) Guard...

After I\'ve painted the AOBL Marines I might buy a box of \'normal\' Marines and add the chainsword under the bolter like the GoW guys have.

I will paint the armour a dark metallic colour (Boltgun Metal with a Badab Black wash springs to my mind) and the lenses of the weapons and helmets will be the light blue colour like in the game. And cloth will be a dark grey/brown. For the base i want something like dark grey rubble.

The only think I don\'t know yet to paint is the coming Ultramarine Iconagraphy. I\'ve ordered the Ultramarine brass etch to spare time ( I hate painting freehand!!), so any advise / ideas are welcome!

PS: my AOBR should arrive the third of September and the brass etch should arive the tenth!

I\'m just a painter/sculptor, not a gamer (although I do play one on television - HA!!) and to me, one difference I see is that the GoW guys armor looks more realistic- to scale - with their body\'s. The Spacemarines look like they\'re drowning in their armor, it\'s so big. Might want to downsize the armor of the fig\'s.... Great idea though. I really like the look of the GoW guys.

I agree the GoW is slightly more realistic than a Space Marine...

Having your Marines done in those muted tones, and gritty look would be cool though!!

Incidently, I heard FFG (Fantasy Flight Games) are putting out a \'board game\' based on GoW next year.....

Thanks for all the ideas, but I will NOT convert the Space Marines! The only thing I might add is plasticard details like extra armour etc.

Other manufactorers will not be used as this makes my army illegal for GW tournies!

The main idea behind this is the gritty colours of GoW on the (usually so shiney) Space Marines!

You don\'t need to put Ultramarines Iconography anywhere on the mini\'s, if you don\'t want to. Any army you create for SM can be considered a codex chapter and use all of the special rules for the Ultramarines. Even special characters can be painted differently. Just make sure you let your opponent know before any games what \"counts as\" what.

You could use the colours on the marines and add a couple of scout squads there probably closer to the Gow images wouldn\'t take much converting either
