Gencon experience

Went to my first Gencon on Saturday. I really enjoyed it. The highlights:

Finally got my hands on the mail-order only Drune Persecutor.

Picked up several other miniatures - including the limited edition Amazons by Dark Sword, a cool druidess with a panther from Magnificent Egos, and the Chronopia barbarian on the elk or whatever it is. Oh, and a pre-release Wargods of Olympus Avatar of Mars - VERY cool!

Got to meet Amypaintsminis, Mrika, and Jen Haley at the Croc Party (well, met Mrika earlier at the exhibitors hall) - very nice people and they made my short stay at the party enjoyable with a nice chat.

Got to see some great miniatures on display for the painting contest, and played a couple of games of Reaper\'s Warlord skirmish game - one with Kelcore that resulted in us and our third partner getting our butts kicked.

Anyone else care to share their experiences?

Oh, one last thing: I spent today at a powerlifting meet. What does that have to do with Gencon? Lots of smelly people at both events....

...I could have sent you one over if I\'d known...:D

Those Dark Sword Amazons are the biz!

I am hoping to get to Gencon UK this year as it is relatively close, just over 100 miles anyways.

Do you reckon it could possibly have been any smellier than a Games Day?

Well, thanks Finn, probably wasnt that urgent that i get him though - he is now amongst the growing pile of unpainted barbaric goodness I have started to accumulate!

Never been to a Gamesday - but at Gencon the smelly people stood out because they would walk closely by and the stench would assail me and distract me from whatever I was looking at. At least at a powerlifting meet the lifters have a good excuse to be a bit smelly.

Indy was fairly close for me, about a 3 hour trip. Of course, driving back at 11pm when you have been going since 7am is not real smart, but it was kind of hard to get motivated to leave when I was surrounded by such lovely ladies at the Crocodile Games party (all taken, but the company of beautiful women is always enjoyable if pleasant conversation is involved too - wow, that didn\'t sound very barbaric, I am going to lose my barbarian king title...)

Well, wish I could\'ve gone, but tomorrow is the first day of school, and Indiana is so freakin\' far! Maybe.. just MAYBE next year I could go to SoCal, but GD is a must. (I wonder how much it\'d cost to set up a lemonade type booth for the Cmon toon and charge for autographs... :p )

gotta check that out...

Indiana is only 2 states away, I really need to go to that next year. Plus on the way, I can see if I can find the \"ball of paint\" which resides in the same state.

It seems the Gencon would be a little more up my alley, as it includes the whole world of minis as opposed to the \'closed shop\' of Gamesday.

With Gen Con 2004 over, the crew and I have been mulling over all the fun we had (in between naps).

Seminar on how to be a professional miniature painter went over well, although things seemed skewed with an all-female panel. We hope to make this an annual event with some new faces every year.

The third annual Aces Charity Speed Paint & Auction was the most fun ever with taunting, laughs, frantic painting with technique thrown right out the window. The auction was yet another record for us, all money going to the Make A Wish Foundation. Look for an even better event next year!

Reaper Speed Painting went off without a hitch thanks to Debbie and Mengu who handled it this year! The Championship was a lot of fun. I need to get over there more often and heckle people...

Paint & Take worked smoothly, and I got to meet a lot of cool people who have never painted before, but now they\'re hooked! Hopefully we\'ll see some new faces around here soon! But it seems that for some reason, although we added lots more chairs, people stayed to paint longer than usual. They must have liked us, or at least our deoderant use made us more pleasant than some alternatives. ;)

Painting Competition was awesome! From my side of things (organizer and judge) we had great quality and quantity this year, from all over the world, and I\'d like to thank everyone who entered for making this our best year ever. We awarded out to 5th place, gave away trophies, ribbons, certificates, MONEY, and Manufacturer Awards, and did I mention CASH?! Also, unannounced, we gave away a Judge\'s Award to the piece we felt was most innovative, original, and fun. I hope everyone\'s happy with the choices made, as we judges walked away very satisfied ourselves. We hope to see more of your there next year!

Classes went smoothly, and as I told many people, I\'ll do my best to twist arms next year to get more classes!

So...back to my napping and dreaming of an even better con next year...

:( For me too! I was online so infrequently before going I didn\'t get to see who all was going to be there. I was out of town for 2 weeks, then back for a day and then off to the convention. I checked out the paint and take and the contest entries, so I was over there. I can\'t see up close well enough to paint without my magnifier anyway, but it looked like the paint and take was VERY well recieved! Well I will definiteley go next year so I will do a better job of meeting up with people!

I was just viewing the Electric Ocean pics from Mengu. Great stuff there.. Aces speed painting sure looked like fun. I think Jeff Wilhelm\'s and Jen Haley\'s mini were the best :p

But one question for you Sue.. will there be any official coverage ? Because some of those pictures were blurry and lowres and high quality pictures of all those entries would be awesome. *crosses fingers*

I had a blast...

Paintminion was kind enough to allow me to be a, uh, paintminion for the weekend. It was cool meeting everyone. Katie, I\'m sorry it din\'t compute when you first said \"hi\" who you were - now if you had your Avatar on your badge, I would have said \"Oh, yeah, you!\" :D

Met Victoria, Jen, Lilli, too darn many excellent painters to name them all. Somehow I missed SaxonAngel - darn all the luck.

If anyone has a good recipie for Burbon Chicken, forward it to Victoria. She loves the stuff! Mentioned trying it with kangaroo when she gets back \"down under\"...

Supervike.. That\'s just about next door to you! You weren\'t there??? I keep trying to make the drive from Denver but can\'t seem to arrange to be away from the business for that long... Oh well maybe next year.. And we could have a CMON gathering for some beers while we\'re at it!

I put Primeval in the corner of mine, but nobody seemed to notice (or they did and tried to avoid me :D)

Well, I can make no guarantees. This year I left it completely in the hands of the Gen Con photographer who seemed to know what he was doing. I just don;t know when I\'ll see those photos.

Next year Gen Con and I are working on making sure we have some awesome covereage, if I have to kick some backsides to do so...
