So i hear people talk about American, French, Spanish, etc etc styles. Personally i notice no real style in minis.

IMHO most definated is french painting style, something like Rackham models. With more additional tones on basecolor, something very artistic and vivid. Spanish style for me is hot brown-red-yellow palette. But think, all this traits was realy actual in 2000-2002 years. Now the borders is almost erased. Borrowing, mixing, intercommunication...Miniature painters community now is realy international, therefore to my look some traits of the painting style now is the traits of person, not country.

I haven\'t got my own style yet...I just keep trying to copy styles of other painters that inspire me from all over the world. I know, i know I\'m copying other painters idea\'s but i figure its a better way of learning than doing it all alone in the dark. So i suppose when i have found my particular style i would abit of a mongrel. A little of everything. :)

I think there used to be broad nationalistic styles but they are less distinct than they used to be for the reasons that Yellow One mentions - now with so much online activity, plus competitions, there has been a thorough intermixing of styles as people pick and choose what they like.

Im a bit like Darkarts. I borrow styles from other people I think the internet helps to break down the barriers otherwise I would only ever see Aussie painters. I didnt even know NMM existed till I found this site.

I think there are certain trends in different parts of the world. The Americans seem to tend more towards a brighter, slightly more comic-book look. The french have a darker, but also quite stylized look, while the Brits are more in to gritty realism these days. But these are just my opinions and very broad generalisations in any case. I think what others have said about the net is probably very true.

Another thing I think is very noticeable is how incredibly fast figure painting as an art is developing. The difference if you compare with just a few years back is enormous, and I think the Americans are lagging behind the Europeans even more lately (with a few notable exceptions).

But this is all just my opinion, so take it with a pinch of salt.

I have heard this discussion before. It would be nice if someone could put some side by side pictures of these national differences so we could see the differences. Preferably pic\'s of the same figure done by people in the different countries.

Maybe you are looking at the samestyle of painting.

There is a definite style of painting. As much as people hate to admit it.

Personally I think this might be due to two factors:

1) People researching what\'s won before at the event they\'re attending, and adjusting to match. Padding the odds, makes sense.

2) The painters know each other and share styles/ideas. Quite a lot of the people I paint/game with have borrowed color schemes, techniques, etc. from each other rather liberally in the past, and I\'m sure it\'s the same for others.

Looking at those four minis is amazing.

They are almost pictures; the more you look at them the more detail you see.

Wonderful:)
