So it's got to cold to use spray primer but im itching to paint some models and have heard good things about the brush on primer gesso. However aparently gesso is not a brand so im wondering if he basic ones carried at micheals would work for my base cost or should i be on the lookout for something more specific? Hope to hear back soon.

Hiya Hellboy!

Yeah, Gesso is just a primer, usually used for canvas painting.

They are all basically the same, so I think just the basic one they have would be fine.

Gesso is not a primer. It's used for canvas, not fine miniatures, nor for metal, or plastic.
The tooth will be very rough, and I've found it doesn't bond well.
That said, some swear by it.
I don't.

VMC and Reaper both make great brush ons. Seriously, for the cost, get a primer that's formulated for what you want to use it for. You will always get better results.

I like the Vallejo airbrush one, no more fumes than the smell of emulsion paint. Can do it in the house at a low pressure to avoid over spray and as long as you're work area or at least spray area is clean and free from dust and airborne contaminates you don't need to sand.

yeah but make sure you got that mini prepped well. Vallejo peels like crazy if you try to sand it. That said, i like it for my display minis. badger is great for gaming stuff though tough as nails!

I have 3 of the massive bottles they sell and still haven't gone through them o_O Thin the black a little or you'll have to turn up your psi to hurricane levels!

I have actually used gesso as a primer, but also as a gap filler at the same time. But that was on a 3D printed model, too, so YMMV.
