Getting back into painting. Need suggestions.

Hello CMoN!

I am thinking about getting back into painting after a three year hiatus. Several years ago, I became frustrated with painting because, in my opinion, I bit off more than I could chew and was unsuccessful with several projects.

I would like to ease into painting again by selecting a miniature and an accompanying tutorial that will walk me through the color choices, recipes, etc. Sort of a cook book, if you will.

I am hoping that if I take it slowly and I am successful with this endeavor, it will lead to bigger and better projects.

In the past I have painted mostly Citadel miniatures using guides from White Dwarf and CMoN. I tend to enjoy fantasy, with an emphasis on the more villainous type characters. That being said, I am open to all types of miniatures from any company.

Does the CMoN community have any suggestions for me?

If you haven't checked out the sticky thread with all the tip and tutorial threads, I'd start there. After that, it's just a matter of picking a mini and a paint scheme. Browse the threads, and the gallery, and see if something sparks your interest. Most of the members here (maybe even all) are more than willing to lend a hand with any trouble you might encounter.

Thanks for the advice. I've checked out the thread you mentioned and found it to be a great help.

I should also mention that I am a fan of the White Dwarf Masterclass articles that take you step-by-step through painting a mini. Something like this may be just what I need. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to WD anymore. I know some of the articles are available online, but some are not. If anyone knows of newer Masterclass articles that may be of interest, please let me know. I may be able to purchase a back issue or two.

Thanks!

I suggest you find another painter, even online, who is consistent and will do the same mini. Having someone else to bounce ideas off and to check in with is good incentive.

Good point. I know having feedback is a valuable asset. It's helped me a lot as I get back into things.

Excellent advice all around. Thank you.

I am seriously leaning toward the Mannfred miniature (on foot, not the mounted version) from Games Workshop and using the White Dwarf Masterclass article as a basis for the paint job.

This satisfies my need for a tutorial so I don't have to spent too much time thinking about the color scheme or paint selection. I would rather concentrate on my painting technique as I am sure it is quite rusty after so many years.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

That's not a bad idea. Using something with an already well-known paint scheme will, as you said, allow you to focus on technique.

If your just getting back in I think the Mannfred Mini is a bit of a challenge, why not ease yourself in with a ork etc.

Thank you again for the advice. I really appreciate it. I think I am going to go ahead and order the Mannfred mini. In the meantime, I have a Gorkamorka ork that I can try my hand at.

Thanks!
