Getting Old

I used to enjoy birthdays, getting older was a good part of life. Then it all went to crap...

Just got my first pair of prescription glasses today. In itself I suppose it wouldn\'t be so bad but when trying on frames the sales ladies started discussing them. One saying she didn\'t like the silver ones, the other said how well they went with my \'salt and pepper hair\'. Talk about kicking a guy while he\'s down.

On the plus side, I can\'t believe what a difference these new glasses make. I had no idea my eyesight was so poor. I can\'t wait to start painting some minis with them, see if they help (and if so well worth the $250).

At least as an added bonus to glasses, it feels like I\'m on drugs. I\'m told that feeling will pass so I\'ll just enjoy it while it lasts.

@freak: I didn\'t bother with \'sunnies\' because the optomotrist said I wouldn\'t need to wear the glasses all the time, just mostly at night. However now that I can see what a difference they make I\'m thinking that the optomotrist is a twit and I will wear them all the time. Seeing is believing afterall.

@wiccapony: I\'ve seen your pic, you\'ve gotta be at least 7 years younger than I am (just had my 36th birthday last week).

@MPJ: :drunk:

I\'m fairly sure that she is nearing 60..

Call me crazy, but I\'m scared of getting old and I\'m only 16. Life is so short, but not short enough that 36 should be considered old. After all, my Dad is completely bald (alipechia, I believe the disease is called) and is only in his 40s.

Oh come on, that\'s not old. Never mind that i just turned 30 last month... Besides you should be happy you went this long without glasses. I\'ve been dealing with them since i was 12.

WiccanPony@ No woman is old until her boobs sag bad enough she can tuck them into her belt. :D

\"You\'re only as old as you feel\"

Which means I\'m screwed.
Glasses all my life.
All knuckles and shoulder broken by the age of 23, I can feel the cold weather coming.
Baldness due to burn scars to the scalp at 30.

But with bald being fashionable, I can shave my goatee and still get carded for cigs.

So, I don\'t look so old, I just feel it.

Did I mention, the doctors also told me I have Artheritis in my knees last month. D\'oh.

@AinuLainour: Dang man, bonk yourself hard. Never, ever, ever guess a ladies age. If you ever find yourself in a position where you absolutly have to guess a ladies age then take your best shot but knock off 20 years (or less if she\'s quite young already obviously). Same goes with weight. Oh, and your to young to fear getting old. I, like most from what I hear, didn\'t have my first serious thoughts of death till 25yrs and didn\'t start feeling \'old\' till 30.

@Onis: To true. I had better than 20/20 most of my life. The astygmathingiemabob is finally catching up to me. Guess I couldn\'t hold it off forever.

Don\'t get ripped off!

A couple of years back I went for a regular eye test and was told I needed new glasses...By the time the sales person had finished with me I was up to about £450/$800!!! The price was hugely bulked up by \'extras\' and I eventually just said \'forget it\' and walked out.

A quick search of the web came up with this place:

http://www.optical4less.com/

I got identical, varifocal specs for less than1/4 of the price:D

Get your eyes tested..get the prescription and just order online..it\'s dead easy and you will save an absolute fortune:bouncy:

/veers off topic...

AinuLanour... 16 is a good age in some ways (mostly physical ones) but believe me, we older folks have some benefits. Mostly stuff you are gonna have to learn the hard way, just like we did ;)

But here are some hints for the next few years, learned by me (the hard way):
- to thine own self be true, don\'t try to be somebody else, it\'ll suck.
- have girl friends as well as girlfriends. If the latter resents the former... flee ;)
- pretty but evil girls are not worth the effort, even in high school.
- life is too short to spend it hanging out with assholes just because you\'ve been hanging out with them for years already.
- vomiting through your nose is a less-than-ideal way to end an evening out.
- if you see something, and you KNOW it\'s wrong... say/do something. Stick up for the little guy (or girl). Be a hero. (\"Save the cheerleader, save the world\"?)
- If you ever doubt that your elders went through this crap too, watch a 1980\'s John Hughes film, e.g. \"Pretty in Pink\" or \"The Breakfast Club\". Nothing ever changes.

See, if I\'d really known all that... I\'d have been a better and happier guy at your age :) Especially the nose one

I wasnt guessing, she said she was 59 or so recently.

welcome to middle age. It\'s a comfy place where we all tell stories about ourselves and have no idea we\'re lying because we don\'t look in mirrors any more.

I got my 1st pair of bifocals 5 years ago. I got headaches for the 1st few weeks when I tried to do anything up close. now I just take \'em off when I paint and use my magnifying light.

Well at least you had some that gave you some fashion scence, I had to bring in a pair of sunglass that my sister picked out for me, and went from there. Not a fashionable bone in my whole body :(
Or as to say \"I am so behind the times, I\'m retro.\" :D:D

Most of the people I work with are about 70, and I\'ve learned that you don\'t get old until you let yourself get old. I remember as a kid thinking 30 was old, and 60 was just ancient, but I know now it\'s all in how you see yourself and the world around you. I see myself as active at 59 as I am now at 29.

Funny thing about aging, at least from my perspecitive. With 42 looming in the not so distant future, I am in dumbfounded to answer the question \"Where did the time go?\" Caught up in the day to day grind time seems to ebb by slowly yet looking back it seems like just yesterday that I was waiting for the bus for school, playing football, graduating college, holding my baby son, etc. Time seems to speed up as you age, although each an every memory seems fresh in my mind, they all are years in the past. Every time I see my 14 yr old son I still wonder, \"Where is the time going?\". Enjoy every day and live it like its your last because before we all know it our time will come too.

I swore I\'d never get old*. Recently I have realised that its inevitable, its like something happens to your brain and you start \'being\' old (this is brought home to me very nicely by my 16 year old cousin, or going clubbing and realising most of the clientel are half your age and weren\'t even born when the song that is playing was released...).

I\'d like to think I\'ve done a reasonable job of staving off the oldness (I can still rock out on the dancefloor and I\'m pretty sure I don\'t dance like my Dad yet), but there are some things I just can\'t cope with (like txt speak), this leads to \'not getting it\' and \'not understanding\' and then its ALL downhill from there. Thing is that the older person probably does \'get\' a lot of \'it\', they were getting drunk and chasing members of the opposite sex before you were born, trouble is \'oldness\' and experience gives you a different outlook on things (an outlook the young just don\'t \'get\') and I swear some \'old\' people plain forget what its like to be young (either that or because they can\'t have \'fun\' anymore no-one can).

Of course this a gross generalisation, being \'old\' isn\'t necessarily about numerical age (as pointed out earlier). Its also noticeable that we are younger longer, Idon\'t think 40 will be middle aged for much longer.

So what was my point? Just that I think getting \'older\' is an inevitability caused by experiencing things, its how you deal with it thats important (I\'m opting for the fingers in the ears going \"lalalalalalalalalaaaa! very loudly approach).

Two more things I like to reiterate:

1) where did all the f\'ing time go?
2) where is all my f\'ing hair going? **

lol

* I\'m only 33, so I fully expect to be looking back in 20 years time going, \"Wow, did I really used to think like that?\" lol

** Boy am I regretting making fun of my Dad going bald now...
