Getting started back...after a long long break

Hi everyone =) First post here too btw lol. I took about a 3 year break from painting 25mm and have recently gotten back into it. I\'m having a hard time getting my techniques back. The last 3 minis I\'ve done have not turned out anywhere near where I would like them and I decide to strip them before I ever get them finished. I\'m using Vallejo Game Color paints (bought the 72 piece set) and some good brushes. Has anyone else had this happen to them? If so what did you find helped getting your groove back so to say? I\'ve done a couple of WH40k minis that were above table-top quality but I really have a hard time with Reaper minis. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome back to the hobby and welcome to the forums!
A far as the paints go, I am not a fan of the Game Color from Vallejo but the Model colors are excellent and definitely worth the investment. Try and post a few pics and we forum denizens shant hesitate to try and help... some of us more than others

I hope I didn\'t post all this is the wrong sub-forum....if so my apologies :( Hopefully I\'ll get the feeling back and produce some stuff I\'ll be happy with. Some photography classes might not hurt either...

Well, maybe one of the mods will be good enough to bump this over to painting or WIP, but here are my thoughts.
- a bit more contrast, darken the darks (though that may be hard) and lighten the lights. You have a very solid basis for this so it should be cake if you opt for it.
- Some spot color to break up the blue and purple may help as well.
- Your metallics are a touch bright (which is fine if thts what you are after) but could be dulled down with some black/brown/blue washes, or whatever color you want.
- maybe add a dot of colors at the corners of the eyes. give them a bit of glow and help them to pop a bit.

They aint bad - it\'s just a case of practising to get back into the groove. Use more contrast too - exaggeration is the key at this scale.

Game Colour is good stuff - many prefer Model Colour, but I have no issues with GC at all. Quality gear, especially the reds, yellows, browns and greys.

Photograph your figs on a tidier background as well.

Firstly welcome back to minis and welcome to CMON.

I came back to the hobby after 10+ years away been back and painting 2 months or so. Best thing that helped me get back in the swing was just painting get used to the basics again and then practicing, and posting in the WIPs section here having folk let me know what would make it better not only got me taking things farther and improving but also developing a critical eye for being able to pin point weak spots in my own painting. Also the Articles section here has some great tips well worth goin thru.

just paint paint paint thats the best ticket for getting your groove back :)

Thanks for the good words and advice everyone. Yea...I started using GW paint and I\'ve just had a hard time getting used to it while getting back into it all at the same time. I think I will get the GW set (thats gonna hurt the wallet but oh well) and see how it goes from there. I\'ve been experimenting with black, white and gray primers too. I started using black and so far I still like it the best. Thanks again and I\'ll post more (this time in the right forum >.>) when I get something post-worthy.

from what I\'ve heard the game colors from vallejo are done to mimic the colors of gw, might not be a bad idea just to take some time with those before shellin out the cash for another set of paints, then again I\'ve never used VGC and only ever used a couple metalics from gw so I can\'t talk from expirience as to how the two sets actually compair as to ease of use or what not.

and posting in the wip section is a great bonus I did with some rather boring minis and some damn horrid pics and got alot of very good advice on both painting and pic taking. Tho from your pics really just using a piece of white paper or a printed out gradient is really the only thing you need. Your lighting and focus is pretty darn good specially for wip pics.

Oooo...I wasn\'t sure exactly how close they were to GW stuff. In that case I\'ll give em a bit more time and see how it goes. As far as taking the pic...I just set the camera right down on the desk and took 5-6 pics and then cropped the best one down rofl. I\'ll get a better background that I can use though...styrofoam cup was just some I had laying around for brushes.
