Getting started

Hi everyone,

I've been wanting to get into miniature painting for several years, and I finally went out and picked up some paints, a brush, and a handful of Reaper Bones miniatures to practice on. Here are my first three attempts:

Goblin 2:

I'm currently in the process of painting this Valeros mini: http://www.miniaturemarket.com/rpr89007.html
Will post some shots once I'm done!

Any tips/suggestions/comments you may have are most appreciated.

That's a remarkable beginning. :0 Tidy, good work with shading and highlight placement. It may be worth looking up 'layering' in the articles section as those stages could benefit from thinner paint to build up successive tints, and experience with the brush so you drag the highlights from the edges into the centre of the highlight. That brush control works with shading too, leading the wash into the crevasses.

You may want to look up 'nmm' (non metallic metals) articles too. Or if you plan on adding metallic paints 'true metallic metals' may be a preference.

Seriously proficient start. :) You'd be amazed at most early painting efforts.

Great start! I'm no expert and I'm sure you'll get more comprehensive advice from others on here but I think thinning your paints more and using more layers to build up smoother highlights would really help you to improve. If you don't already have a wet palette I'd advise getting yourself one as they are really useful. They're very easy to make - mine is just a lidded plastic box with folded paper towels in the bottom to hold the water and a layer of baking parchment on top.
